Default Could  I make laser shades?

I was wondering, how those laser shades work. I have a bunch of blue and green tinted glass pieces. None of them are the right size to make shades, but if I test them with laser light through it and find one that blocks the most, I might try getting bigger pieces.

just wondering if that would work.

No. There are literally dozens of threads in this section why it won't work, the following thread is one of many examples.

http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...num=1181266846

And read the stickies, especially this one:

http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...num=1184904347

You only have one pair of good eyes. Either use the box, or invest in goggles that are recommended here..

I was just wondering,

i'm only going to use my DVD laser outside, so no reflective surfaces.

I'll get laser shades soon.

but...

what if I actually found something that worked to block 650nm?

Phazonx - there have been LOTS of people that have insited on trying to find something cheaper than $40.00 to protect their eyes - quite a few now have permanent blind spots due to carelessness - and they were some of the most careful people I know on these forums ! Even one tiny little blind spot is WAY too big a price to pay - expecially when it could have been prevented by buying and wearing some $40.00 Goggles. I owuld not suggest you try your experiments, unless you already have goggles and are checking them out for fun - not for actual use....

What's really sad is we keep warning against this over and over and some people don't read no matter how we explain it to them. I found a website where someone had posted pictures of damage caused to his eye from a laser. I wish I could find it again...I should have book marked it.

Phazonx, I will admit I am very passionate about safety as I only have one good eye. I lost an eye many, many years ago. I am completely used to it, but I do not want anyone to have to go through it. Cover up one of your eyes with your hand and walk around. This is what life could be like for you and others who do not listen to our warnings, or even worse if a beam or reflection took out both of your eyes.

I second the part about even the msot careful can hurt themselves, I was trying to adjust the focus on my (now stolen) pulsar when my finger slipped and hit the trigger. No, I wasn't looking down the barrel, but It was pointed, I thought, at the matt-black computer case, however, instead it angled too much and hit a CD and blasted me in the eye. I have the luck of hte devil, thankfully, and the blindspots slowly went away over a period of ten days. If that hadn't been a CD (which is pitted and makes a very pathetic mirror thankfully), but a real mirror, or even glass like a CRT monitor, I probably would have permanent blind spots. If anyone's wondering, I now own 2 pair of military-grade laser goggles.

Ashton - where did you buy those goggles, and what type are they ? The reason I ask, is becuase I had some that were military surplus, and I THOUGHT I was safe, until I actually saw how well the modern goggles work.

All - just be careful...

I don't think it's been well articulated, but what I believe peeves people about paying US $30-40 for these goggles is they all know that in terms of construction, that other than the color, they are exactly the same as perfectly adequate ANSI certified transparent dust/chips/fragments/shooting safety goggles that cost only US $5 almost anywhere. In some industrial settings, they're almost disposable and handed out to visitors or office staff who visit factory floors only on occasion.

What the disgruntled are not doing is factoring in the economy of scale with those safety goggles. The clear ones, or the fancier ones that do double-duty as sunglasses for outdoor workmen and sportsmen are produced by the thousands, if not millions. The market for laser safety goggles is much smaller, perhaps only several thousand units of a particular OD and frequency color for the entire world.

Part of me definitely thinks that some of these goggles could be sold for about $20-15 or so, but I also remind myself that:

The polymers cost money.
The injection/molding machinery costs money.
The factory workers cost money.
The distributor needs a markup.
The end seller needs a markup.

And it's all being done with an economy of scale that's a fraction of regular transparent safety goggles.

I bought them from CPF member Wileecyotee, they're BLPS specs (one bieng pure green for lasers, one being clear safety with the green laser attachment that clips on) I still have the datasheets that came with them if that'll tell you anything. Last thing I want to do is accidentally get a specle from my >200mw and find out these things didn't protect me!

Ashton - can you post a picture of the glasses, and of the case they come in ? If they are the ones I THINK they are, then you MUST get better goggles ASAP - as the ones (Milspec as well) I first had were total crap when compared to the NOIR brand of goggles that is so much more popular and recognized as teh ones that Wicked, Nova, and others sell. Just looking out for you, that is all :-)

interestingly enough NOIR is the only company I've found so far that makes the 927nm goggles I need for the IR laser I want (for ~ $140!!!)

I'll get some pics posted either late tonight or tomorrow, as I'm working on wrappign up a term paper. But for a genneral desc: they have dark brown ("clear&quot legs going to the goggles, which are like large sunglasses. the "side shields" are clear, even on the "pure laser" goggles. They include a brown strap, and come in a light brown/beige case that somehow mounts on an army belt or backpack. (as I Said I'll post pics later, but I dont have time right now, sorry)

No worries, Ashton - they sound EXACTLY like the ones I bought Off of Ebay - I ended up giving them to Milos, as he said he may be able to use them for something....

simply if you are getting into, or are into the hobby of lasers, shurely you can afford goggles, and your eyes will thank you. seriously if you can afford a laser, you should be able to afford goggles. you only have 1 chance!
