I am in the process of making one of the MXDL DIY lasers (in the waiting on parts stage). While I am waiting I thought I would try to make some eye wear so I didn't blind myself.

The general idea was to get some of those stage lighting gel sheets, such as this:

And either attach them to an existing set of safety glasses, or fashion my own. There are a near infinite variety of colors available in the gel sheets. I had planned on taking a red laser pointer with me to a store in town and finding a color that blocked it best.

Has anyone attempted something similar? Any advice/criticism? I'll try to update this as my research continues.

It's not a good idea to make your own protection goggles. You're better off buying some, you can get the lasershades from wicked lasers for about 60 bucks shipped (I think) Or you can hurry up and get a pair from the group buy going on for 35 bucks. Remember you only get one set of eyes and I think it's worth it to spend 35 or even 60 to protect them.

A valid point, however if I can in fact fashion a pair that block the light I don't see why it would be preferable to buy the manufactured version. The most likely problem that I am anticipating is that the laser burns through the gel screen in short order. This isn't a guaranteed solution, but it should be fun to experiment with at the least.

I have actually tried this being somewhat of a lighting technician.
A 180mW ish red burns straight through blue gels almost instantly.
The point is that you buy the good ones because they work, they are tested and they are not hair thin. Spend money on good tools and you know they will work well and last longer.

I might end up using a dark lens to attenuate or perhaps a couple crossed polarizers. Something a little more robust than the gel sheet initially. I have a pair of of manufactured safety glasses on the way, I think this project will just be for something to do now.

I ordered a pair of the uvex glasses listed above. As soon as I get a laser all put together I plan on testing exactly how much light is transmitted by them to see if they are a viable alternative to the lasershades. I have access to a photo-diode so it won't be speculation or pictures but actual values for transmittance. If anyone has any other types of materials they would like me to test send me a pm.

(might be a little bit before I get the numbers up, as I am still waiting on a few parts to arrive)

Should be getting some numbers for transmittance tomorrow. There is an obvious visible dimming of the beam when the glasses are placed in front of it, but I would like to know how well they actually work. I don't think they block quite enough for my comfort so I ordered a different pair that I will again try to test time permitting.

I believe SenKat got these goggles a long time ago and said they were crap, but who knows, maybe they've changed. ::)

Like I said, that was a long time ago, I don't remember if it was SenKat who got them, or pseudo??? But I do remember reading someone tested them and said they were crap, but like I said maybe he's selling different goggles now.
However I did find this ancient thread.

Well I just finished testing the transmittance for the Uvex glasses. I was rather disappointed but not really surprised. Approximately 55% of light was transmitted. I don't have any mW values as I was using a photodiode and just comparing the relative output voltages minus the background. I didn't have time to get a reference voltage from a known source.

Thanks for the link Chido, I spent quite a while going through all of the sellers comments and didn't see anything bad about any of his safety glasses sales. I'm a bit pensive now, but at least I won't be out too much if they are indeed crap. I'll update when I get them.

I just compared the pictures from the safety glasses group buy to the glasses I bought off ebay and they look remarkable similar. We'll have to compare once I get them and see if they are in fact the same thing.

i also remember someone saying the zonestealth goggles are crap, but i suppose it's better than nothing
