Can an Optometrist look at your Retina for damage? I don't want to go there to find out I need to go to the next level in eye doctors.

I think the Otomertrist will find what prescription you need for glasses by doing eye reading tests. You want a Opthalmologist is a eye doctor who looks at the health of you eyes . Just ask when you make an appointment that you are there to check if you have eye damage not get a prescription for glasses. They will tell you what what doctor to visit. Good luck and hope its just something that will go away and not premanent.
Oh, if you plan to get a laser over 5mw get some goggles.

thats funny you should ask my opto just told me that i have eye damage in my left eye my retnas scared pretty bad i kinda remember a few years ago was at work and holding up a guidrail when my co-worker accidently struck an acr blinding me for a day or so in my left eye
giving me acrflash from hell so whether your lasing or welding be carefull  :P :'(

A great way to check yourself for damage is to look here: http://www.ncbi.ie/files/images/Amsler Grid_1.jpg

The image is an "Amsler Grid".

You cover one eye and look at the black dot in the middle of the grid with the other. If you can see the entire grid and see all four corners with the one eye, then you're all good.. Repeat with the other eye..

If parts of the grid are missing or blotchy, if there are black spots, or if you can't see the entire grid then you need to set up an appointment with an opthamologist to determine if the damage is the result of lasers, and to determine how to correct it (if possible).

At the yearly checkup, the pupils are dilated and the optometrist checks for anything awry. Laser damage included.

They give you funny looks when you ask "do you see any laser burns?"

Why didn't you guys just buy goggles and avoid this problem entirely? Before I received my first laser I had goggles ready. 8-) Your eyes are priceless so why take any chances? I'd go with OEM but some places will sell you goggles for just 25$! Sorry for the welding accident!

I was at the opticians on friday, and the optician had a look at my retinas ( not that I asked her to ) but she never seen anything abnormal :)

Also, my Optician wanted to laser physics and optoelectronics at Uni :D
 
Did it occur to anyone that damage to your eyes could be perpetrated by individuals with mal intent? PURPOSELY? Hiding in places and shining these pointers in your eyes repeatedly? If you shined a laser in your own eyes or went to one of those shows and received damage that would be rare and somewhat stupid but given the prankish attitude of youths these days they may be shining these things in the eyes of teachers they don't like for example. Or you go to foreign countries and the brat headed techno kids shine them in the tourists eyes or the local crazies think your oogling their wife so they're gonna burn your eyes out for a mid evil punishment. The whole town of tribal pygmies with their catalog toys. Are you following me? How can you detect when someone hiding is shining one of these stupid pointers in your eyes? Thanks for inventing this crap. A whole world full of indigent murderous third worlders with these things in their pockets. Shooting people with a light gun discretely/silently and blinding them forever without being able to be spotted or arrested for carrying a weapon. They're just harmless little highlighters for pointing at things and "Highlighting them" Answer THAT oh forum responders.
 
Ok first of all im wondering if you came here just to troll? On this forum we promote laser safety ALLOT, maybe sometimes even too much :). It is an ultimate crime on this forum for Someone to shine a laser at a plane or somebody else, or thier own eyes. I admit maybe some people are stupid enough to do it, but most people here aren't. I have never heard of someone blinding somebody with a laser before by the way. (but im not sure if it happend). Lasers aren't weapons, they are meant to be used in a controlled environment for hobbyists to have fun. They are not toys either.

Why would they give you funny looks about that? If you indicate you may be exposed to eye hazards such as lasers, and medical professional should take that seriously, and perhaps do an extra thorough check based on that inidcation.

I think anyone working in eye health should be aware of what lasers are currently on the market, and what damage they can cause. Surely they can deny that any legal laser is harmless, but thats just shutting their eyes. Each and everyone of them should be aware that there are lasers on the street that pose serious eye hazards, and should take anyone that suspects to be damaged by them seriously!
 
Anyways since it may be a little difficult for many people to comprehend the potential for injury inflicted intentionally by the deranged masses can you answer me this? Are the hard core enthusiasts of course working diligently to produce one of these pointers with a NON VISIBLE beam spectrum? And of course it would stand to reason stepping up the power from 100mw to like 300 or 500? And I know your just wondering why would anybody do that? So then nevermind while you grok all that but in your great endeavors to promote safety then please show something - Some device that can detect and warn a regular person that a laser beam is being pointed at them or in their eyes. Can you do that? Do they make such a thing. Of course not. Can our great starwars scientist inventors create or display such a device so maybe we have half a chance in the coming decades of walking around with normal vision without burnt out little retinas. Thanks
 
What good would a device do to tell you a non visible laser is shining in your eyes? at the higher intensities you would be burnt before you hear an alarm go off.
 
Maybe you could block it with your hand faster than the speed of light.
