I'm not looking for your speculation or assumptions, I have those. I would appreciate knowledgeable responses on this question though.

"Can Diffuse reflection from a 1W 808nm Cause Eye Damage"

Intuition leads me to think the two ways to damage your eyes with lasers is by causing destruction of the retina by too much power entering the eye, and overwhelming the retina with over stimulation. This is only a broad assumption though.

I.E. - Shining 1W of 808nm on white printer paper with eyes focused on it 12" away. Can this damage the eye?

You may also want to include details on how small of an area that 1W of light is being focused on, and whether you only care about reflecting off of white paper, or if there are other materials too.

Not that /I'd/ be able to give you an answer then, just that information is probably required to give you the correct answer. The material because different materials will absorb different % of a particular wavelength, and the focus size because it determines how small of an image is focused on your retina. You can stare at a 40W lightbulb from a foot away, but a filament is massive compared to how small of a spot a laser can achieve.

True, I'd say a 1mm focused dot and white paper is just an example, I curious to what a worst case could be on a non-mirror like surface.
