I'd be tempted to treat the goggles like a bullet proof vest. Wear it for protection but I wouldn't get my mate to give me a direct hit just to see if it works.

ok... i had holes in my retinas for unknown reason (doctor said genetics)
no way i knew about them except i used to see floaters occasionally going around my visual field...

he fixed it using a very powerful blue laser with my eyes completely dilated. (used special drops to make my pupils hugggee)

i had to look in certain places(up down left right) and he would zap the edges of the holes inside my retinas and bind the edges together by burning them w/ the powerful precise blue laser.
He sealed up all the holes and im left w/ 2 eyes that are in perfect condition
DEFINiTLY NOT BLINDED!!!
so.....
i would take all the instant blindness stuff with a grain of salt

The doctor isn't an idiot because he has specialized training. You're the idiot for suggesting that the advice that a 1watt laser can blind you should be taken with a grain of salt. Very special application of anything can be considered useful... Using a snake's venom as a way of treating other types of poisoning is a very specialized scenario where with the proper security measures, something very dangerous can be made very useful.

What you're suggesting is to disregard the advice of safety and precaution.

But if you want to get a 1 watt laser and stare down the beam, that's your prerogative. Just don't be stupid enough to suggest basically that others do the same.

THis all goes back to the say, "Would you jump off a cliff if your friend told you to?"

The person that follows the bad advice is just as stupid as the one that gives it.

I disagree with this for two reasons:

1 - not everyone who is new to lasers will understand how powerful a watt ACTUALLY is, and we have this guy saying to take it with a grain of salt... They could simply not wear safety glasses based off of this advice and accidentally blind themselves.

2 - never ever underestimate the power of stupidity. While I typically agree with Darwinism, there has to be a certain level of reasonable education associated with anything that contains potential risks. That's akin to telling someone 'it's not the volts that kill you, it's the amps'

The advice is relatively meaningless without some basic information and suggesting to someone who doesn't know as being 'dumb' simply reflects your own attitude towards a reasonable basic education on safety concerns.

I suppose you probably also think we should also just take the warning labels off of everything and just let the problem sort itself out huh?

When it comes to safety, can you REALLY blame people? Think a little more long term. The last thing we need is some kid going blind because of bad advice taken on our forum and having that announced publicly. Then there's bad news press and soccer moms who are even more uptight and high-strung than we are, and our hobby, which is already under fire enough as it is, just gets hit with another blow...

Yeah.

Whatever dude. I'll let your reputation speak for itself.

Yeah but no matter how hard you try, there will always be dipshits.

If someone does give bad advice, stay calm and correct. You stated a fight with him, you stated your case, so step back man.

You have told anyone that reads it that its not a good idea. So why keep going, you know?
