Lol, I'm suprised they haven't gone to WL. What, with all their advertising and all. I would like to see WL getting sued...

"The union said the perpetrators are "playing Russian roulette" with the lives of hundreds of passengers, and has suggegsted that some laser pens should be classified as weapons."

This is terrible! If lasers get classified as weapons, we're all screwed.

People still go hunting, and all you need to do is get a permit.
...and have a clean record...

It's idiotic people who shine these things at pilots that cause all these problems. (I know this has been said before). Lasers classified as weapons? OMFG! :'(

I think a petition was up a while back to save lasers from being banned, perhaps now the BBC will completly bash lasers we should make a new one asking for a license?

At least that way the government can tell exactly how many responisble laser owners there are instead of automatically assuming we all point them at planes.

It's all the same "song and dance". I wasn't the least bit surprised to see a picture of an airplane in lieu of a laser when I opened the link. I swear I've read some of that exact same verbiage on some other article:

"The pilot, who was over Stockport at the time, was temporarily blinded. Unable to read his instruments, he had to make dangerous emergency manoeuvres."... and I add: ... "to make sure they could catch the disrespectful little prick in action before he stopped".

In all seriousness, we all know by common sense, instinct, and knowledge that lasers can be dangerous, and IMNSHO (in my not so humble opinion... I got it Dave, you didn't need to clarify) "the general public" lack these simple important aspects which prevent us from shining lasers maliciously. And on another thought, has an actual injury yet taken place due to this? Other then what has happened to the suspects who've gotten caught?

Please no. There are already laws against using a laser maliciously. Minors would not be able to obtain a permit, at least not without massive time spent signing forms and reading contracts and getting signatures.

NOOO!  :'( But it's not too bad, seeing as it's already illegal to import them, and I'm pretty sure no one here uses their lasers in puplic. Nothing could really go wrong unless they search our homes, or we have evil neighbors that will report us.  :-/

It's exactly like Russian Roulette except instead of the cylinder having six positions with one bullet it'll be something on the order of 20 million positions with one bullet. You have to look at it from this perspective and not from the media perspective. If something is possible then it has some probability of occurring. The probability may not be great but given enough time it is probable it will occur. Now some socially challenged youth decides it would be fun to point a laser at a low flying airplane. You have two conditions when the laser hits the airplane, either it continues to fly or it crashes. Those are the only two possible outcomes. Now the pilot may get a face full of laser light and panic and crash the low flying plane. That would be a direct effect of the laser. The issue here is the youth has no idea how the pilots may react. It could be no reaction at all with the pilots saying something to the effect of, "oooh look at the pretty green light.", all the way to freaking and crashing the plane. It is out of the youths control. If you don't think someone will see the beam in the sky and report that to the police and news you are crazy.

The second possibility is that the youth points the laser at the low flying plane and the plane has a catastrophic failure of some kind that causes it to crash. People report seeing a green laser beam in the sky.

So you have a plane that flys or a plane that crashes. If the plane crashes the media will be all over the laser end of it. We know this to be true regardless of the true reason for the accident.

The key thing to keep in mind here is that although the laser itself will have nothing to do with an aircraft accident it could begin a chain of events that end in a crash. Very few accidents are the result of a single failure. What happens is a long chain of events leading to the one single final outcome. We are looking at the probability of the probability of the probability. When it all comes together an event will occur. It is the basis of Chaos, that tiny bit of the world we can never control. Because it is possible, you can guarantee it will happen at some point. There will be an aircraft accident and there will be a nice laser beam in the sky at the same time. The mathematics do not lie. As Agent Smith once pointed out, "...that is the sound of inevitability..."

Enjoy them while you can. As long as there are stupid people with lasers in this world they will be playing Russian Roulette not only with the airplanes they lase but also with your ability to legally own them.

I hope your wrong... but I see what you mean... I hope I never have to see the day that this becomes a reality. :-/

They should do some research before posting something like that.

everyone on these forums know that if they say they are "240mW" on ebay, they are probably just 30mW without an ir filter (correct me if i'm wrong)

The other thing is i have not seen anything on the news about lasers being shone on aeroplanes in the UK, so they are obviously exaggerating the story.

i say they should worry more on knife crime, but then again they kinda exaggerate on that too. They show all these "flashy collector item knifes that they confiscate from peoples homes, but the most common knife used in these crimes are kitchen knifes which you can by for 99p at TK Maxx or available in your on home, as everyone has them, they are NEVER gunna be able to get rid off knifes because of this, and if they do, people are gunna find something else like, forks and chopsticks. (anyone that has done martial arts will know anything can be a weapon.)

has anyone here been stabbed with a fork?

it hurts more than a knife.

also if u have seen kiss of the dragon, you would know that chopsticks kill.
i think that wat the BBC fails to see is anything can kill, and lasers are no worse than spotlights. any laser that would cause a crash would cost a f*** load of money and anyone willing to spend that much money should know that they shouldn't.
media exxagerate everything and make uninformed decisions. i think one of you should sue them for defamation ;) nad tell them to bann everything that could be used to hurt or kill some one including a pen and a keyboard and a mic hehehehe
