I have no doubt that they could easily get them mass manufactured and sold for about 50 dollars each...

The problem is convincing police departments that getting an LPM is the right way to go, vs simply having cities crack down on all lasers, by banning anything over 1mW.

The cost of an LPM is already sufficiently low... if they were mass produced, it would fall even more, but even as it is, $130 per unit is a drop in the bucket when talking about the operating budgets of most police departments. 1 speeding ticket covers it:eek:

The current situation with retards on beaches is untenable:(

Anyone have any experience in getting the attention of city government? To create a letter/petition to inform city councils/PD's who actually do end up dealing the problems on a local level?

I'm just glad they weren't over 5mW. At least I couldn't see any beams at all even looking at where the laser was coming from.

I question that they were all really <5mW....

Ain't that the truth. It's quite annoying going to fireworks displays anymore as well. There's always a few retards shining 532's during the whole show :(

That's because they can't find Fog...

I have no doubt that they could easily get them mass manufactured and sold for about 50 dollars each...

The problem with that is that the Laser Power Detection device
would need to be NIST traceable calibrated to be used in court.

LPMs are already "mass manufactured" by companies like Ohir..
Coherent...Newport and others.
But you will not see a complete LPM from them for $200... let
alone $50.00.

There is a reason those NIST Traceable LPMS cost that much
to design... manufacturer... calibrate... and guarantee NIST
traceability so they could possibly be be used in a court of law.
I'm pretty sure the design Engineers and technicians at those
LPM companies don't work for the salary of a McDonalds employee.

BTW Jake...
glad you caused at least one Moron some grief...:eg::gj:

Well, theorically, pocket-size units like Coherent Lasercheck "pens" can be mass-produced for very few money, from big companies like Coherent (the actual prices are not only matter of research, materials and traceability, it's mostly matter of marketing strategy).

I mean, there's not too much difficult in getting silicon photodiodes with known and certified curves from specialized manufacturers, like as example Hamamatsu (that, like Nichia, have outrageously high prices for private clients and sampling requests, and low prices for mass-production industrial quantity) ..... and also the internal electronic (measure and display circuitry) of these devices is really simple and low-cost ..... but if they admit publicly that thing, then they ruin their own market, so you can never see around a Lasercheck for less than 100 times its production price :p .

I have purchased a few LaserChecks in the past few
years.
One we purchased directly from Coherent for >$500.00
Shipped to us.
I'm VERY sure that Coherent is not assembling/testing
these LaserChecks by hand one at a time.

I will never understand the Forum mentality that members
here are all owed by manufactures of products these
products for just the price of parts...
We are no more special than any other customer out there...

Laserbee have a good point on the cost of a LPM for police use.

It got me thinking of this article in one of Americas more reliable news sources. According to that it may be possible for a cop to simply guestimate the power output of a laser for sale.
(A depressing article btw.)

Sorry, i may have said it wrong.

I never said that a company must sell their products just for the price of the parts, i understand perfectly about research and marketing.

I only said that, IF they want, for specific use like police tools or similars (where contractors usually get special prices), they CAN sell tools like as example the lasercheck pen for say, $50 each, still gaining a lot compared with production costs ..... and that, if this is not done, is just for a marketing choice, not for production prices.

This, ofcourse, don't mean that they are "evil" :)p), after all, anyone can sell their products at the price that they want ;)

Incredibly enough, week ago on my vacation I also saw a bunch of vendors selling bunch of green lasers to bunch of people. Which is incredibly new thing here in Croatia, green lasers are totally unheard of until now.

Saw a vendor point one at the nearby wall and at his feet, he didn't go near anybody's heads. Unlike a bunch of kids with those lasers. Thankfully I believe they were either really underspec or with empty batteries (those few that I saw), as the beam is not even visible in dim evening light conditions when going towards you.

Also luckily, they costed $30, which is quite a bit of money here, not exactly spare change and above the "Too much for a toy" threshold.

Yeah, that pisses me off too.. All the idiots around here that think you have to sell something/anything for what it cost for the parts.

It doesn't work like that. Not in the real world at least.
