3D Goggles = ultra cheap laser safety?

Dingle was talking about it and I had to try it - and the results were quite surprising. They may not be good for much above 50mw since a direct hit would actually melt the thin plastic, but for viewing they seem better than the Wicked Lasershades  These pictures were all taken at the same F-stop and exposure time to prevent changes in camera settings from affecting the results. See for yourself:

the goggles

i've also concluded that the blue lens is much poorer quality and still allows red light through fairly easily - so i would not recommend them for viewing high powered red lasers.

LOL ;D I have t hose excact same goggles from fruit by the foot packages, i tryed the blue one, it worked good for me? i used my diy, but to test i shone it thru them onto the wall and it made a nice hole pretty fast, havent tried the red side yet, wil have to wait until christams for my dx true 5 or x-65(that will prob just burn straight thru it) IF only i could find where i put them now..

....lazer.... ;D ;D ;D

the blue side works, but even for only a split second hit to the eye they probably will not block enough light to be safe. my 35mw green warps the red plastic but can't burn a hole through it - the output on the other side stays much dimmer than the dot of my 5mw core

Wait, the red filter blocks the green light that much!? I am just gonna get 2 of those glasses and cut one of them up and maybe layer over them. So bascially each lens has a red/blue on it for double protection... Whether or not it is "good" protection, i gaurantee it is better than nothing...

Your "guarantee" is full of crap, sorry to say. All you are doing if you use those is damaging your eyes. there is a little item called VLT - if the eyewear you are using dialates your eyes too much, you could be letting in LOTS more laser radiation than even without goggles/glasses/fruir loops or whatever on your face. Don't be a cheapskate, or don't whine here when you cant see shit - it's just plain stupid to not save up for, and spring for goggles that are DESIGNED to protect your eyes. Anything else is just plain STUPID.

Almost certainly NOT true for the same reasons sunglasses WILL NOT WORK. Hey, they're your eyes, just don't go around suggesting that anyone else try it.

Please let no one take this personally, but this is probably the most stupid idea to date on LPF.

Remember, when it comes to your eyes, you only get two chances. If you can afford to play with lasers, you CAN afford to buy proper laser safety goggles.

I hereby petition these “3D glasses” threads to be compiled and sticked so that no one mistakes this as a “safe and cheap alternative” just because it’s in the Safety board.

it was just an idea, but the OD rating for 532nm light is surprisingly high considering we are dealing with a thin sheet of plastic.

I would never use anythin other than laser glasses dont want to lose my eyes :p, it is fun to use 3d glasses tho like shine it thur and look how much dimmer the dot gets then watch it burn straight thru it and imagne what would happen if that wall back there was not a wall but your eye ;D
