18.99 red goggles on ebay OD5

Potentially a nice find, I'm kind of wary of glasses from sites I don't have experience buying from. I posted a review today of laserlands' glasses and they didn't perform overly well. It's hard to tell from looks how a pair of glasses will perform though, which is why it can be so confusing to buy a pair.

Anyway, you can totally buy these and test them, I'd be interested to see a review! :D

I actually bought 1 of those on the 15th. I will probably get it next week sometime.

I am hoping to get my LPM sometime in the next week or so too. I will be able to see how much they block.

It will match my green blocking glasses and my blu-ray blocking glasses perfectly :).

Did you notice the question down at the bottom on the eBay listing? Someone asked about q-switched 532nm and 1064nm protection. She just says sure $60 for 1064nm and $18 for 532nm. Her response should have been: what is the maximum pulse energy, what is the repetition rate, what is the beam diameter, what is the divergence, at what distance will you be from the aperture. Nope not a single question about it. I just find that a bit funny when she is supposed to be selling safety eyewear. Maybe it's just me.

Apparently that she i only interested in making money

I don't know about them ..... and when i asked them only if they had any absorption curve, they just replied "sorry, we don't ship in Italy" and no other ..... so, i imagine they have no curves and any other data about them .....

I find the specs extremely fishy:
- Visible light transmittance: >55%
Plain nonsense. The goggles look dark, and you absolutely can't protect 600-700nm with a reasonable high OD and have 55% VLT.

Next, the OD:
- Optical Density: > 5.0, (OD +5, OD +6)
Now, is it 5 or 6?

Making it confusing:
- Attenuation: (10-6 <N% <10-4)
The high attenuation means OD6 or OD4. Different from the OD's early mentioned.

And it's not certified to any standards, so safety is a guess with these goggles. Only the low price makes it attractive.

Does anyone want to purchase some and review it for the sake of the forum :p?

I purchased some 7 days ago. When they come in I will attempt to review them. I hope to have my LPM by then to give some real numbers on how much they do or don't protect. Without the LPM though I doubt the review would be too helpful.

I posted these pics in the review thread, thought it might help here as well.....

The laser is just a < 5mw red gun sight, look how much passes through....

The assumption so far is that the ebay seller mentioned in this thread is the same company that sold yours to you and that the goggles are the same. While I do agree it does look that way we won't know for sure until someone does a review of them.

Have you thought about trying to return your goggles? I know I would be contacting the company that sold me those.

DO NOT BUY THESE GOGGLES FOR RED LASER PROTECTION!

The ebay seller is laserlands. They put a company business card in my shipment.

I rarely type in all capitals but this is one time I feel it is VERY necessary. I just got my goggles in the mail today from the ebay link mentioned in this thread (buyamore) and I have verified that they do not block anywhere near enough to protect you. I could barely see a difference in the brightness of the laser dot when shined through the goggles or without.

That ebay auction needs to be shut down asap. Selling laser eye protection that doesn't work is very dangerous. Someone is going to have some serious eye damage if they expect these goggles to protect them and something happens.

EDIT: I got a response from them. They claim it can protect human eyes because it blocks 55% of a red laser beam. And I guess that is true if you don't have more than a 10mW laser. But for anything above that you are in trouble. For hey are useless for most everyone on this forum though. We use lasers that are much more powerful.

This is the video that they claim shows it can protect human eyes. LOL!

The funny part is that they measure the beam without the googles and then put the goggles over the camera and mention that the dot is smaller. What would have been better would be to measure the beam power without the goggles and then with the beam going through the goggles.

They say it can protect from 500mw lasers. :/

Based on all this information I know I personally will not be ordering anything from them. They obviously don't know much about laser safety.
