Wicked Lasers E3 "200 mw" review

I received this laser 77 days after ordering it. I knew ordering from wicked lasers was a bad idea, but I did it anyway just out of curiosity and because the hosts looked so nice. I placed an order for an "E3 200 mW" which were at the time $99.95 (great price for 200 mW right?), as of now the same laser is priced at $179.95. The guy I talked to and got shipping info from Joe, said that there was an issue with the hosts or something and this was the reason for the delay. The host I received does say E3 on it as you can see in the pictures, but it is not the same black color as before and now has a pretty cool metallic finish.

Why not do so pros and cons...

CONS:

1) took 77 days to arrive
2) customer service people were not honest with me about shipping time frame
3) and most importantly, THIS LASER IS NOT 200mW, I have some photos of the dot below and I may post some beamshots when it gets dark but this thing is obviously (at least to me) NOT up to spec. I don't have an LPM, but it will not light a black colored match, smoke any black plastic and you can only barely feel the dot on your skin after a few seconds with fresh batteries, and it doesn't even sting you can just feel the warmth. I fear that I was given the 100mW version that they now offer for $99.95, I even called them after the price change and was assured that I would still be receiving the 200 mW version I paid for, but I am doubtful.
4) the FDA tail cap is an absolute piece of junk. There was no way to keep the laser on, you just had to wiggle the pin around until you got it just right.OUT OF THE BOX THIS LASER DID NOT WORK. I had to solder a piece of copper wire over the tail cap to just bypass it.
5) this laser is a little bit of a mode hopper at first, which is expected with green and it usually settles in after a few seconds, not a major con but I thought I would mention it.

PROS:

1) nice, cool looking host with an LED light that seems quite well built other than the garbage tail cap.

2) EXCELLENT beam divergence and quality, definitely up to spec here maybe even more narrow than stated, throws a nice round point on a structure ~1/2 mile away

Overall I am pretty disappointed with wicked lasers and their E3, other than the nice host and excellent beam divergence, everything else is negative. I pay $100 + dollars for something and I expect to get the truth from a company and I expect the product to function right out of the box, these things did NOT happen. I'm not sure what to do with it really, I have thought about returning it but I just imagine how long of and irritating of a process that would be, and I still may get another not up to spec laser. With the little fix I did to bypass the faulty tail cap, this is a nice maybe 50mw green laser with a tight beam, I may just keep it and accept the loss.

Cheers, -Matt

Did you already let the laser warm up ?
Let the Laser warm up for 1 minute if it is still as bright as before you really got a <50mw laser unit ...

@machro: Yeah it was definitely warmed up because I had been running it on and off for a few minutes, this laser throws a beautiful tight beam at night, but the power just is not there! :( :(

Good review:beer:

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) it is another nail in the Wicked coffin.

With good divergence, which you say this laser has, 50mW+ should sting your skin, not just warm it. If I were you, I'd just keep the laser, it is a nice looking host, and I doubt the aggravation of going through return or exchange is worth it.

( i am not very updated with WL son please correct if i am wrong), but earlier the included a data sheet , where you could see the graph of the laser.
Was one included ?

@ Machro, no just a users manual full of WL propaganda, a warning sheet, and a shitty belt holster. I would have loved an LPM graph but I'm sure they stopped doing that since these things don't cost $600 + anymore. Either way my disappointment has faded, underpowered yeah but still pretty nifty (still not worth it though :toilet:)

Good review but that's annoying about it being under-spec, either way it's a nice host!

Hey man there are 2 things you can do. email the support and ship is back like i had to do with my old one and get a new one. i just got mine back after 5 months and the darn thing seemed to go through batteries like nothing and berely burn. that was untill i got new batteries and poped a disk made of tin foil inbetween the battery and the end cap. this bypassed the funky pin lock which is where all their power problems come from. now my laser burns through a 1.5 mm thich cd jewl case with ease. it will slice black tape in under 1.5 sec. i sliced electrical tape in half in 1 sec. it also poped a red, green, orange, and blue baloon without any black sharpie on it. give the tinfoil a try before you give up on the thing. i am currently going to be working on a metal insert or somthing to make it non micky moused. the problem is that the pin lock is too loose in most all of the E3 lasers and it will have its moments where it will look like a 200mw then look like a 0.1 mw. mine did this till i bypassed the retarded endcap with foil. now its always 100% power. btw make the disk wide so it touches the metal on the inside of the host and also touches the battery. you might have to experiment a bit. is this doesnt work then try a dif brand of batteries or just send it back for a new one. if you need help pm me or somthing. please let me know your outcome.
p.s. sorry for commenting on a month and a half old post

my 55mw cni style wicked laser (one of the very old ones) burnt skin (quite quickly and it hurt too) and would on occasion light a match. yours is defiantly not 200mw unless the beam diameter is very wide.

Sorry to hear about your wicked doo doo. If I were you, I'd return the piece of shit to them and get my money back. Wicked lasers is a horrible company, I honestly don't know why anyone deals with them.

@laserdudeE3

Thanks for the reply, I've found that similar tricks work with my E3 as well. If you get a good solid contact with the host, I think at least some portion of the advertised power is there, 200mw....still don't believe it. I knew I was taking a risk with Wicked but thought I would roll the dice anyway.

I doubt mine can even hit 100 mw, I cant even light a black match with fresh batteries, don't have an lpm yet but WL sucks, never responded to my multiple emails asking for a return/exchange.
