Waterproof Laser Review

Laser: DX 20mw  waterproof 532nm CR123A laser

My first one arrived but died in a split second, my guess is it got knocked about toomuch in shipping as the infamous 'red glow' was coming fron inside. This one however, wow. It arrived yesterday so the first thing i done was unwrap it (shipped with no box) and put in the battery, 'POW' , it worked, looked kinda weak, so i took it appart.

The module in this one was press fitted and popped out easily, a little too easily, but that's a good thing, the broken one wouldn't budge. You'd think the way it's built the whole of the module would touch the body to dissipate the heat, but this is not the case, only the tip of the laser touches the flashlight body, leaving a cavity that is a couple of millimeters all round.

There is also a chunk of aluminium that screws on over the lens, (which is not adjustable) as the heat comes from the pump at the bottom and nothing is touching it the laser may have heat problems or need a duty cycle. My guess is it's for show/supposed heat dissipation, but on this laser (as the module is so loose) the pressure from the battery makes the module pop out slighly so the aluminium chunk presses on the glass.

So i put it all back together and turned it on, still seemed kinda weak, about 20 seconds later a nice big bright round beam came flying at the wall (about 5 times more powerful than the weak one), woo! I ran a bath and turned the laser on and off many times each time expecting it to die.

My bath was ready and i was sceptical of how waterproof it was, I was hessitant to say the least but turned it on and plunged it into my hot bath (expecting it to break) but nope, it was great, I couldn't believe my eyes. I dunked it in and out for about 20 seconds at a time checking for water leaks but nothing, as my bath was hot i stopped it at that incase it over heated. So I left it in the sink to drip dry.

A few hours later it was night time, and as I took no pics of it the first time, I filled the bath about a fifth of the way (the water was freezing) and waited for the laser to warm up, as soon as I put in in the bath it went weak again, so I pulled it out and the beam was squif, I thought I broke it, then realised there was droplets of water on the lens, quick wipe with a microfiber towell and all was well again. So I turned it on and put it back in the bath waiting for it to warm up to take a couple of pics.

Bottom line: I like it, it's sexy, sturdy, solid waterproof, cheap, runs on cr123a and has a constant on end clicky.

Only problems i can see is the focus can't be adjusted and the lense is not ar coated.

Sorry if this falls in the middle of you posting pictures, but these are awesome photos! And a very informative review. I am sure you are having tons of fun with it. I know with both of my DX's they have a warm up period. Both are very short though, my 5mW just moves up to full power where as my 30mW "jumps" to full power after a moment.

GREAT review, I think I may have to buy one of these! I was looking for a waterproof laser, I saw DX's and I was a little nervous to buy one, but now that this one works I think I'll buy one.

Great review!! Thanks.
Its good to have waterproof laser, if for nothing but having it weather safe when you are outside.

cool

ps
That front end, looks like reversed SPYDER 2 front end. :)

Thanks!

None of my dx pen style lasers have a warm up, that i notice anyway, at first it was like they were underpowerd, then they hit in, and ever since they've been the same , like they were new and needed breaking in or something (took about 15 seconds for the 'break'). I adore my dx 30s

There is another thread about this laser somewhere, someones died shortly after they got it. mine died in an instant, I never gave up and this one is great, I'll keep this post updated if anything happens, but it seems like a solid laser. I keep checking it for leaks, I don't fully trust it, the lens is the only place that doesnt have a rubber seal, so i may throw some instant gasket round it for my own peace of mind.

The front does look like it's on backwards, but i think it looks better than the spyder. Plus it had a clip for your pocket and no chance of dust/lint on the fragile lens. I may try run it over at some point. I've seen some of the dx torches with a car on them and they don't even scratch.

I filled the bath about a fifth of the way (the water was freezing) and waited for the laser to warm up, as soon as I put in in the bath it went weak again, so I pulled it out and the beam was squif, I thought I broke it, then realised there was droplets of water on the lens, quick wipe with a microfiber towell and all was well again. So I turned it on and put it back in the bath waiting for it to warm up to take a couple of pics.

I think it must a thermal issue.. as soon as it hits the cold water, conversion efficiency plunges at it goes weak. Apparently it does warm up after some time.

Then again, you can't expect a dpss laser to work submerged in water of any temperature... but its good to have a waterproof for outdoor use when it may take some bad weather.

How would you judge power level, close to 20 mW, or overrated?

Also - did you muck with the pot yet? ;)

This thing could hold up to any weather (within a certain temperature range). I'd say it's putting out more than 20mw, not compared it side by side to any of my other greens yet, i'll do that next and take some beam/spot shots.

Pot... If it's not broke don't fix it. i might do it at some point, but after the long wait i'm gonna pass on messing with it for now, i'd test the current but i'm not familiar with the language of the multimeter. (I've got the best one of the two models from dx)

Nice review mate it's convinced me to order one right now ;) They are on back order but I don't mind waiting for DX as they always deliver in the end :)
The postman must think I have a lot of LED flashlights in my house now as that's how all there stuff is labeled :D

They're worth every penny, specialy as the pound is even stronger on the dollar, if I had more spare cash and didn't have a car to tax/service/mot soon, then christmas ontop, i'd be buying another one incase this one died. I still might do. But i've got alot of other stuf en route to keep me busy for now. Most of all I'm looking forward to trying out my gps jammer. Why do i need a gps jammer you ask? I've no idea, that site keeps me buying things i have no real use for.

I know what you mean with the postman, every day/few days he knocks with a package and a piece of paper for me to sign, it's like it has become routine to him, the best was with my crossbow, I still can't believe it got through with led flashlight on the declaration. The sheer size and weight of it would of made me want to open it if i were in customs.

Dx is too hard to resist.

It's funny how the label everthing a led flashlight, even if its something completely legal to import otherwise (like a charger or usb hub).

I'm considering this http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.9311 laser at the moment - looks similar to the one you tested, though its a different housing i guess... still waiting to see some responses to that one before i order, but if it performs near spec i'd say it's a good deal too.

Your usb hub or charger probably contains atleast one led ;), but it is funny, the ammount of 'led flashlights' going through customs must seem suspect.

I was thinking about that laser a while back (30mw, before the 90mw came out), it's not waterproof, atleast that's what they said when i messaged them, plus the WF-501B flashlight itself does not mention being waterproof. That's what sold the WF-502B style to me, chances are the module from the 90mw would fit into the 20mw waterproof.

The thing you have to think about with flashlight lasers like these is the laser has to pass through the flashlight lens, so it's like shining your laser out of a window before it hits anything. Unless you screw the top off.
