Good hello,

So about a month ago i bought this TO-3 package diode:

and decided to put it into this host:

The diode has a TEC underneath to keep the diode cool and as other members have strongly advised me, it must be run or inevitable death will occur.

With that in mind, Lazeerer had run this diode before with the TEC current at 1A and said the power was rock solid, so i set it for 1A or 1050mA with 3x AMC-7135's.

Here's my wiring diagram.

Now the diode is case positive BUT, the host im using doesnt use the case for carrying any current so i negated the case positive approach, Also the host is anodized and is insulating the case from the heatsink and diode.

For the mounting i came up with a crude but simple approach to mounting the laser in the host:

So now to building it, i thermally glued 2x amc-7135 drivers to one of AnthoT's copper driver heatsinks in between and wired it the the hosts original contact board.

With that done, i machined up a 2 part heatsink/module piece:

Little bit of thermal paste between both heatsink parts and the diode and bolted it down:

Assembled!

Now, i did a makeshift alignment with a 3 element glass lens with the "3rd hand" soldering tool, with the driver set to 700mA, i was only getting 260mW, which i thought was a bit crap.

Anyway here are the LPM Results with various lenses :D Each test was 1050mA on high mode.

Very surprised to see it get up to 770mW and that test was after a few others, a test i didnt record saw it peak over 800mW

Nice shot i took of it:

Thanks for looking!

Fiddy.

The output looks rockstable. The TEC is really keeping the things cool.
The diode is also massive. Good job ! :yh:

Good job, is it just me or is the beam a little slanted?

One question however, does the voltage automatically evenly split between the 2 drivers after reaching the contact board?

Wow looks great! :gj:

That heatsink is massive & along with the diode TEC you must have some superb duty cycle :D

It looks a little slanted in the photo, not sure if its an illusion or not.

Why would it split? they are wired in parallel

Yup! what ive noticed is, if i run the laser in low mode for a bit, the TEC cools the diode more, so when i bump it into high mode its already chilled :)

Wow, this is simply stunning. :goodjob:

The focus adapter looks beautiful too!

The TEC cooling in low mode and then jumping into high mode with a chilled diode is like using Launch Control in expensive sports cars.

Notice the grunt:

Cheers!

I missed this thread- although I have been away for a few weeks.
Awesome build mate! Good on you for getting it in such a small host, I would have whimped out and gone for something huge like a maglight.

We will need to have that Mini LEM sooner or later!

Thanks bru!
If was a machining challenge for me :-)

Is a lem a meet up or a low emissions veichle?

Laser Enthusiast Meet.
Like here .

Was trying to organize an Aussie one as Dan was so close figured we could car pool, you and Adrian are in/close to Sydney, and there was some interest from Brissy. Figured we could all go to Sydney. Now Dan is in Cairns of course.

Still would be good to do. 40-odd aussie members on here.

This is really nice work!! Great to see the TO-3 package put into a handheld!

Keep up the great work.

Out of curiosity for those of us who are wavelength collectors and realized that they can do this, too, if it's been done before, what are the beam specs like on that diode? Single mode or multimode? Further, where the hell did you get that thing? :D

Yeah the beam specs are bad typical multimode .
150x1um emitter. Very similar to the Mitsubishi 500mW 637nm.

That's where i bought mine from :-)
