Short Review: Tiny Green Modules - O-Like

I bought a small green pocket clip pointer from o-like, and was impressed with the power from the tiny green module inside...

Plus, it was running from a single AAA battery! (1.5 volts)

So I asked Susie if she could get these modules, and I just received the two that she got for me today...



As you can see, there is some reinforcing that will need to be done between the driver and the module, so that the pins will not have too much pressure on them. Or just wire them to a different battery contact. But I am not worried about this little thing... Just amazed at the size and power from a single AAA! (1.5 volts)

I can't believe the these little things give over 40mW's from a single, standard AAA battery! (Energizer e2 lithium)

One is over 50mW's! Battery current draw - 500mA's. (Energizer e2 lithium AAA)

I hope all of them are this way!

I don't see these modules listed on her site, but here is the little pointer that got me interested in these modules:

Then I asked her if she could just get the bare modules.

Wow these things are pretty sweet. Nice find Jay, I'll be ordering one soon.

The only thing I can see that is odd is that the ENTIRE LASER, with battery, pattern cap, & nice little storage box is only $22.00 plus $4.00 S&H, while just the modules alone are $23.00 plus S&H. Seems to me it would make more sense to just order the entire laser & save a dollar on each one, NO ? IDK, just seems like a better deal to get the whole laser !!!

I ordered an entire laser. Looks like a fun little $h!t !!!
I hope the module price drops to ---say --- $7.00 !!!! Also, What's the pot on it do? Are we back to pot modding ?? :evil:

Hmm, if these are small enough, maybe Jayrob could fit them into that mini stainless steel host he's recently made a kit from...just a thought, I mean, who doesn't want a 45mW tiny green laser? :eg:

I've got a 62mW module (over powered 50mW o-like) just waiting for one of those little stainless steel hosts!

It's a cut down module just like I showed in my Mini Green thread...




It's a 12mm module, and will fit into that 10440 stainless steel host with a 10280 battery. (200mAh's - maybe 20 or 30 minutes between charges)

But these new modules are so much smaller! Only 8mm in diameter! And run off of 1.5 volts...

About the price, yeah your right. Maybe Susie will get them cheaper??

If these are reliable and steady, i'd probaby use one of these in a white laser project because of the size! Let me know if they are stable and have a long duty time.

Mini review here.

I got my mini laser today from O-like. It is a nice looking little laser with a screw on rotatable difraction grating for the star effect. It comes in a small unique plastic box with magnetic clasp. The pocket clip is so tight, it will almost tear a shirt pocket off!
The USPS cracked the little plastic case but there was no other damage.



It comes with one aaa cell making it ready to run. I found a piece of paper inside the packing telling me that the + on the cell goes to the front unlike other greenies without a boost driver.

Power: This laser is VERY temperature sensative. At 65 Deg F, there is no green output. Hand warming slowly starts showing some green which after many minutes goes from 1 mW to a short peak of 20 mW. It quickly stabilizes at 11 mW. Understand that it is labeled <30 mW so it is within spec if the temperature is right but it is becoming more difficult to get a beam even with warming.
It is noted that when no green beam is produced, there is plenty of deep red emitted measuring 11 mW. I presume no IR filter since the IR splash is visible on my hand at 1".

The kalidoscope attachment works well when the laser functions.

This laser is best suited for a planned use as a project housing and not as a dependable little laser show. After warming in my shirt pocket for almost an hour, there is almost no visible beam.

Update coming!

When this laser was received, the Alk cell measured 1.52 volts. It quickly dropped to 1.43 volts under load causing the above observed problems. Low voltage should be no problem for a boost driver BUT this circuit needs a full cell. A new cell returned this little laser to "normal" status. I can't seem to measure current draw with a DDM likely because the pulsed nature of the driver is not recognized by the meter in DC mode.
This laser is now stable at 45 mW at 65 Deg F and at pocket temp, 26 mW. This does appear to like KOOL. I was a little harsh in the first analysis but many boost drivers accept lower voltage cells and still produce output. This driver may be limited due to size constraints.

I can now give this laser from O-like a good rating for fun usage and short duty cycles as normal for small pointers.
