Yeah they ship the laser with the tail cap off. I think the laser dosnt fit in the standard box because of the extra focus rings.

Yes that is a nice looking laser you have there. Some video would be great.

Lorgar,
I received mine yesterday and the focus adjuster is horrible, it's like the threads were cut at an angle. Feels like turning a bent wheel. I haven't had much luck with an infinity focus at all. I was able to get a pin point at about a foot that has a bit of burning power. I got a peak reading of about 850mw so far. How is the machining on your adjuster?

It appears something is blocking th LD when adjusting. I was able to vary output from 150mw to 960mw by turning the adjuster. I have been in contact with S-ky and they are taking care of my concerns. I will start a new thread when the completed laser arrives. With pictures and video.

The machining on mine is very good no wobbles or loose thread.
I will have a few quick vids of it soon

this was tested with your kenometer I'm assuming. Lorgar's got one that's coming to him soon. He has requested I keep it until I ship the barrels to save for shipping so he's going to be able to compare output power on his soon. It is a shame yours is not putting out the 1 Watt its supposed to.

(i've got a sneaking suspicion this is going to be a norm for them) just an opinion not based on fact.

Isn't it just the coolest thing to have a laser that burns so well you feel like you need to have a fire extinguisher handy?!?!

Well even with the focus it still has a nasty divergance

It probably has a rather large multimode diode in it, which is fine as a pump for a DPSS but will not allow for good divergence no matter what optics you use.

To get an IR with better divergence it could be possible to use the 1064 nm solid state laser as you would in a DPSS green, but omit the doubling crystal. I'm not sure how efficient the 808->1064 process is, but it could be fairly close to the quantum limit (75%).

I was just thinking about that. With one of those 1.5W and a beam expander maybe you could give someone across the street a flat tire.... :p

But a lot more expensive

Hard to say really, i dont know how expensive the solid state laser really is (the rest of the cost also being a doubler crystal and their alignment to eachother). Getting the doubling part to work is most tricky though, so i'd expect that to be the major cost in a green's crystal set.
