what.gif

This is a green DPSS (diode pumped solid state) laser module that outputs just over 55mW of laser radiation at 532nm in the green portion of the visible spectrum.

It comes in a very handsome glossy black metal body with a shiny gold-colored tailcap, bezel, accent band encircling the barrel not too far back from the bezel, and pocket clip -- this laser is (in my opinion anyway) very classy and you need not be ashamed to whip it out even in the presence of the snootiest person (valet, waiter, maître d', etc.) around -- as long as you don't turn around and hose them down with it anyway.

Feed the laser module two AAA cells (see below), and then you'll be ready to rock.

To use the laser module, just aim it at something you wish to point out, and press & hold down the button on the barrel for as long as you need the laser spot. Release the button to turn the laser module back off. Yes, it really is as easy as that.

The laser module comes with a pocket clip, already attached. You know what it's for.
If not, slip the laser module into a shirt or pants pocket, and slide the clip over the outside of the fabric of the pocket when the module is being inserted into the pocket.

To change the batteries in your green laser module, unscrew and remove the tailcap, and set it aside.

Tip the two used AAA cells out of the barrel and into your hand, and dispose of, recycle, or recharge them as you see fit.

Insert two new AAA cells into the barrel, flat-end (-) negative first. This is the opposite of how batteries are installed in most flashlights, so please pay attention to polarity here.

Screw the tailcap back on, and be done with it.

Current usage measures 517mA on AAA cells of unknown prior use

Since this is a high powered laser module, I would recommend a duty cycle of no longer than 50%. That is, one minute on, and at least one minute off to allow the "guts" inside to cool down. This is my own recommendation, based upon past experience with high-powered green DPSS lasers in pen-style bodies.

Beam is not white like this photograph makes it appear.
Beam is also a lot smaller than it appears; the beam image bloomed significantly when photographed despite my having taken this photograph during the daylight hours.

Power output measures 55.185mW on a Sper Scientific Pocket Laser Power Meter # 840011; using AAA cells of unknown prior usage.

Spectrographic analysis of this laser; spectrometer's response narrowed to a band between 800nm and 820nm to check for the effectiveness of the IR filter -- which appears to be 100% effective.

USB2000 spectrometer graciously donated by P.L.

TEST NOTES:
Test unit was discovered late on the morning of 03-08-11 (or "08 Mar 2011" if you prefer) while looking for another product requiring spectroscopy.

UPDATE 03-22-11:
After some rather serious investigation, I have come to the startling conclusion that this laser may in fact be a Wicked Lasers Phoenix 80mW Green Laser.

PROS:
Very bright green laser beam.
More powerful than most other "pointer" style lasers.
Nice looking black case with gold trim.
Feels good in the hand; is also rather hefty.
No beam artifacts - none that I've been able to detect anyway.
Uses batteries that are relatively inexpensive and readily available.

CONS:
Not waterproof or submersible - but most modules aren't. Will not figure into my rating.
Consumes a lot of power, so you'll be going through batteries if you use it a lot.
Can't use it in public without a variance.
More delicate than directly-injected diode laser pointers/modules.

i am not sure why anybody wrote something yet. but correct me if im wrong - this is not only a laser modul but a complete laser-pointer. also im not sure if 55mW is considered high-power. id say its considered middle if not low- power, isnt it?

anyway - laser looks great. congratz

I'm not sure what the point of a review is that doesn't list the source of where to get them. After all, the whole reason to review things is to help others make informed purchasing decisions.

My interpretation of this review is that in a nutshell it says "I have no clue what this is or where to get it, but it's GREAT!" And I don't really see how that helps anyone.

Additional investigation has revealed that this may in fact be a Wicked Lasers product; probably (or "possibly" anyway) a Phoenix.

looks like an old Phoenix that was sold as 75mW if I am not mistaken.

still not sot sure why post a review about a low power pen laser nowdays.

brings back memories though.

my pen lasers now range from 250-1100mW home made. No time to photograph and post though.

I wanna know whats with all the kids stuff you have hanging around. Is it for your family's kids, or is it your collection? I've observed that older men that play with toys often like little boys.

So which is it?

@qumefox I thought the Exact same thing.

@Tech_Junkie Ah man... I Told you about it Already... Hes got a ton of youtube videos where He likes to play and talk to his sponge bob toys, hes got a R2D2 he talks to. He likes RC heli coppers and airplanes, For some reason in EVERY SINGLE One of his RC Flight videos he says: Entering sector Number 15.6.. Oh I mean Flight #156 Over and Over and Over again the same mistake...

We should be nice to him IMO... Altho to this day I still don't understand how he has such good light mapping software but doesn't have a LPM....

Sorry I had to post this video..... But... It's just... ah nvm....

Ah man bud, there just giving constructive criticism.

It's kinda hard to read a review if you don't let us know where to get the unit being reviewed, Whats the point of the review if we don't know where to get the item, thats what we meant.

And Tech_junkie is just well.. tech_Junkie he harasses everyone for humor factor. We do really appreciate the work you do for your reviews.

Don't Go, I speak for a lot of people that we like you around and your addition to the forum.

Just some jokes and constructive criticism is all this is bud. Don't cry or be sad. Thats why I said we should be nice to you. You Should stay.

I am ***NOT*** a pedo for Christ sakes!!! I definitely loathe them (or anybody who molests or otherwise injures children for that matter!!!)

SpongeBob SquarePants may be targeted toward a younger demographic, but many adults love it too.

The R2D2 robot that I am seen talking to in some of my YouTube videos was purchased primarily for my website because it has LEDs in it. And I talk to it because it was specifically designed for that purpose -- in fact, if you do not speak to it, it will just sit there dumber than a bag of hammers, and occasionally beep and flash its LEDs in effort to get your attention.

So please do not compare me with garbage can fodder (pedos) just because I have a few items lying around that may be more suitable for younger people.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and let's get back to what this BBS is about: LASERS of course!!! :can:

Thanks for the review.
I always like seeing your reviews with the spectrometer readings included!

I'm pretty surprised as well to see that there was no IR splash, pretty rare from the usual 532nm laser pointer.

As far as what you have on your wall, I don't think it matters one bit. I'v watched a few SpongeBob shows with my nephews and always thought that they were pretty fun and has some real adult humor in them(now I don't have any plush toys.....but each to their own!)

To Each his own, like Envy sorta said... I'm glad your not leaving I Appreciate the spectrometer readings as well. and I'm sure you will get a LPM soon and have a complete laser review. As people comment we know you will change your reviews to better them. Like maybe you'll want to set up the pictures better to just have the laser shown and not your room that way you don't have to talk about it. Would look Very Professional. Just a Thought...

I do have an LPM made specifically for that purpose; only its upper power range is limited to 40mW at 632.8nm and 400mW at 400nm. Something I snagged on Ebay a number of years back for ~$150.00. Money is a bit difficult to come by these days, partially due to my low, fixed disability stipend and partially because a lot of the advertisers on my website jumped ship in early-2010 when the ISP that I'd been using for 11+ years decided to get out of the webhosting racket and simply allow all of their paying subscribers with websites go down the tube. This forced me to move my website and lose all of my high search engine rankings as a result.

As for setting up pictures better, my room is really the only place in the house that I can fire lasers of any power and not get into trouble...but I do have an idea that may allow me to take the 10' shot with only blank white wall and not have camera zoom or anything else queer the results.
I'll try it ith this laser and replace the photograph shortly. :)

Yeah that LPM is not going help you a lot for what most people are using theses days. You can get a 2.5W LPM for 140$ now, so you might be able to get that some day.
