a little review of Novalasers' X100 (100mW). i am not an expert yet, the only previous experience i had with laser pointers was a barrel type green 10mW laser. i have been following this forum for a while as a guest and decided to order from Novalasers as they seem to have an excellent reputation/quality according to the feedback from the members here. sorry if this review is a bit lengthy, but i wanted to give everyone a detailed description. i did not include any pictures as this has been done previously by many.

ordering, e-mailing and delivery were all routine and up to the reputation that Novalasers has. Magdalena (head of sales) answered all e-mails promptly and friendly. the laser arrived in a well padded white cardboard box without batteries. i also ordered the sporty type safety goggles, which came in a black carry-on box.

the warranty and instructions papers stated that the peak output had been measured at 114.8mW and that the average output was 107.9mW. the pointer had no scratches, or dents, the battery and the lens caps were unscratched. around the area where the pocket clip is attached was some left-over residue from a sticker as i assume it, but that was wiped away in seconds. the body is made of brass as a look inside reveals, the caps are also brass made. the black coating seems to be thick and is nicely done. the warning sticker had a bit of bubbles, i took it off as it was a bit overlapping the lens cap. according to Novalasers this does not effect the warranty of 90 days.

2 Energizer AAA went in and i fired it up, pointing into the night sky from the balcony. it's a beautiful, extremely bright green beam, really amazing. one has to see it to really get the picture. the rubbery button is a bit hard to push, i assume this is an added safety feature to avoid accidental firing. pointing it in a room at a white wall(non-reflective) illuminates the whole room. even at a distance of maybe 20-30 feet it is almost impossible to look at the spot on a white wall as it is so bright. in bright daylight the beam is clearly visible indoors and the spot can be seen outdoors at walls as far as maybe 2000 feet away in daylight, at times the beam is faintly visible outdoors, in very bright sunlight it is not. its the night time where the jaw dropping starts. it's just amazing, people down at the street see the beam and stop to look at it. one can see the spot on far away building walls, and it can be seen in low clouds.

as for burning stuff... the first thing i did was to put the safety goggles on, they sit tightly, seem to be sturdy made, and are adjustable. with the goggles on, the spot can still clearly be seen. it pops darker balloons without having to mark them black, only white and yellow balloons need a black marker spot. without marker the popping works at a distance of maybe 5-8 feet, with the marker i have popped balloons at +10 feet. red headed matches ignite after 2-3 seconds, black matches light up almost instantly. electrical tape is more tricky. i have not yet been able to cut through it, even with fresh Energizers. it starts to heavily smoke the tape but it doesn't burn through. maybe my tape is too thick... black trash bags get burned through in an instant. it immediately stings on the skin from a distance of 1 foot and black plastic can be marked and made smoking.

to summarize, i am extremely happy with my purchase as the quality and performance of the X100 are top notch and exactly like many members before me have indicated it already. thank you for reading this.

UPDATE: it actually burns electric tape easily... if you know how to do it ;) i guess i was too excited first to put a bit of weight hanging at the end of the tape... ;) i've been using Ansmann 1100 NiMH rechargeable with it and they work like a charm and last for quite a while. the beam looks the same and burns the same with the Ansmann as with fresh Energizers/Duracells, no difference but they definitely last longer. thanks.
