So I decided to write a little review on the Spartan BP 40mW from Dragon Lasers.  I really love this piece of kit and I really think other people can love it too...

Firstly I think I'll start off with the unit it's self.  Compared to the Hulk or RPL style pointers, the Spartan is incredibly light, it's also incredibly small for what it's capable of.  It has a nice metal feel to it (obviously) but is cut very well as it also provides a lot of grip for when carrying it around.  My only gripe with the design of this laser is the tail cap switch combo.  I've actually owned two of these now, the first of which had to get RMA'd due to a faulty tail cap.  The second that I recieved also had a funny button, but this unit actually works flawlessly, so I can't complain about that.

During the day the beam isn't so visible, which is expected for 40mW, but the dot is incredibly bright and reacts differently to a wide veriety of materials, some times being darker and some times being much brighter.  Also the pulsed action is very entertaining and can provide endless fun, untill your eyes stat to go funny.  But at the night time or in a smoke/fog filled room/area, this is when this laser comes alive.  It's supprising how bright it actually is in the dark, compared to how, non visible it is during the day, it's absolutely gorgous to look at.  Especially if you move around and catch the beam from different angles, it's truely stunning.

Overall, it's one of the most impressive pieces of kit I've seen in a long time.  I was lucky enough to catch this laser when it was priced at $900, it's now priced at $1200 which is unfortunate, but compared to Optotronics' RPL blue laser which is 30mW - 36mW, if this laser truely is 40mW - $60mW, it's a serious contender.  I really want to get this laser tested and find out it's actual output, but from what I've seen and what I can tell, it was well worth the money.

Great flashlight style pointer. Pity that it is so expensive. Isn't it possible to DIY one with a B-R burner which is much brighter and costs a fraction?

A BR burner doesn't actually put out blue light and it also won't be as visible unless you shine it at fluorescent objects.

Yeah, this is DPSS (with crystals) and 473nm. If you use a blue ray drive, it's only a standard diode and outputs 405nm, which is more violet than blue...

I'll probably extend this review later on, but for now I'll just leave my thoughts...

Man I want one of those SO bad!! These days I have to pour most of my "laser cash" into my gas tank though :-/

Nice pics, thanks for putting it next to the RPL for comparison.

Unfortunately that is a Hulk, also from Dragon Lasers. But the size and shape is almost the same as an RPL, so if you own one you'll get a good idea on the size of the Spartan. Unfortunately I don't have a Viper/X to compare it to...

nice laser :)
does this spartan take a long time to warm up, or do you see full output straight away?
sorry i couldnt make out if you said that you compared to this to an RPL blue 30?
wouldnt the beam brightness of this 40mw pulsed be equivalent to 25mw of CW?

Well pointed out, someone else would have to comment on that... In no way am I saying this laser is better than the RPL though (I should probably fix that), hell it's an RPL!  But like I say, if the power level does indeed rest between 40mW and 60mW, it's a serious contenter against the RPL's power and size.

Yeah, I would say it takes maybe a second or two, it deppends on the temperature really.  If it's cold it might take a few seconds to brighten a bit, but generally it seems pretty concistant.  I still don't think it's as quick as a green laser, but maybe that's because my green is 150mW so...

At the time I got this it was still £450, had I actually had the £600 for the 35mW RPL, I would probably have got that, but at the time I think the SBP40 was the better deal...

From what Dragon Lasers have told me, this laser is measured and rated with the same apparatus as a Constant Wave laser, so the actual output in pulsed (if measured with a meter for pulsed lasers) will be higher around 80mW - 100mW (depending on the exaxct power of the unit).
