*update*

I measured the laser today again and now it got a little more stable once it's warmed up.
The chart goes to a peak and then power drops slowly, but I won't let
this baby get too hot.

Here's my new record peak:
473nm104.jpg

I got today my newest laser:
finally a 473nm :) it can be seen here:
Spartan Series 20mW Blue Handheld Laser :: Blue Handheld Laser ----- 473nm Laser ----- Spartan Series Lasers :: Handheld Lasers :: Dragon Lasers

Company, Shipping and Packing

First i asked on the website about the laser if they LPM it and if it's IR filtered.
Chat was offline and I received a mail the next day from Frank aswering all my questions.
I ordered the laser on 18 of July and I got it the 29 of July.
Compared to other Asien companies that's really fast but of course it was pretty expensive (35$).
They shipped with tracking so I could always watch where it is.

So package arived and everything was well bubble wrapped packed and the laser was in a anti-static bag.
To my surprise there was also a battery already inside the laser.
That's why it felt so heavy when I took it out ;)

I also ordered some glasses with the same order. Everything arrived in good condition.

Laser / Host

The laser is a Spartan, made from CNI.
It's quite heavy in your hand and it was a little longer than I expected it but I guess the module takes up some space.

7.jpg

The laser has got a clicky butten at the end and it doesn't have any safety features.
So with the battery already inside it could test it shortly how it looks :)

5.jpg

I took the head off and you can see the IR-Filter glued on.
It seems to be done a little bit sloppy as also does the lens which is glued on not being in the middle of the aperture.

6.jpg

I didn't open the laser any further than that.

Beam / color

The color itself is really beautiful, a pure light sky blue it's for me
and when I look at it next to a 445nm laser it seems a little turqish.

Some beam shots inside in the dark Without anything added:

I tried to test beam divergence but that was a bit difficult for me.
It goes like...
Dot at aperture seems to fit the specs from the website so it's 1.8mm (pic thru glasses)

8.jpg

at 1meter it was about 3mm big

9.jpg

and I measured also at 10m and that was difficult to say but I think it's about 9mm big.

11.jpg

With glasses I couldn't see the dot much and w/o the dot overshined so it's not exactly at all.
But given this I think divergence is lower than 1mRad.

Also the dot is very round after warmup. It seems like perfect Tem00.
Before warmup it's a little oval and it also seems to "move" around until it becomes round.

Power

After what I heard from Dragonlasers around here I hoped to get a little overspec laser.
But in fact it has about double the power as advertised on the website and as Frank assured me it will be on-spec.

The power is unstable. Much more as I was used to with the 532nm's.
I think the 473nm likes it pretty hot. So when it's cold and not warmed up it will first only be in the teen numbers
then suddenly rise a bit when it gets warmer.

LPM-Test:

I only did 45 sec. tests. But sometimes with only short breaks between.

12.jpg

Room about 20 degrees warm. Laser cold.

473nmkalt2.jpg

room was quite cool so laser only a little warm.

473nmheiss.jpg

and after that when the laser is warm it goes tipically like that:

473nmmittelwarm.jpg

here with the maximum peak:

473nmwarmpeak.jpg

The charts looked all so different but on all was...

1. laser needs warm up
2. after warm up, the peak comes quickly
3. power drops relatively fast

Summary

I'm completely happy with the laser and the whole buying experience. :yh:
The laser is nicely overspec (I'd say avarage is about 35 to 40 mW) has a very nice beam and dot but is a bit unstable.
And... I love this color :p:p

Did you test it with an IR filter?

O wow... Either way you havent seen rhd's thread, ordered it before that thread or you just have balls!

Anyway looking forward to your review, and gratz on the nice laser!
...now im struggling again with the thought of buying a complete set at dl....:yabbem:

Re: 473nm Spartan 20mW from DL*overspec*

Review done. I hope I can add some beam shots.

@DJNY: Yes IR-filtered tests

Nice laser you got there

Did you try to pop a balloon?

Very good Review! 70mW peak:drool:

That makes me to sell my 473nm lab for this:thinking:

No I didn't try...

actually I don't even have black ballons anymore and a colored one it's not gonna pop anyway ;)

Nicer Review.:gj:

Is THis Normal for a 473nm laser to jump around like that with power in Handhelds.?

I was always under the impression that once they are warmed up the are stable. "in Most cases of course" It seems that it only holds its peak for a few seconds.

With 70MW sure can, I have a 50mW 532nm and pop balloons (only black and red ones) about 1 meter away

Try with orange-light brown or black and tell me something.

Nice laser and review

Thanks :)

Yeah I try some balloons soon ^^
I haven't even tried that with an unfocused laser before

Re: 473nm DL Spartan 20mW *91mWpk*

I just hit a new peak today :D 91mW!!

473nmpk91.jpg

But this laser is really unsteady. If it's cold and it isn't warmed up it will only be in the teens and twenties of mW.
Once warmed up it reaches these peaks but then drops relatively fast (after 30 more seconds dropped into fourties).

Anyone know if this is just because of the temperature that it's so unsteady?

91??:drool::drool:

Because is 20mW. All DPSS Blue Lasers is Unstable. You need to use good Cells.

Re: Review: 473nm DL Spartan 20mW *91mWpk*

I know my GLP-473 (From CNI) is unsteady for like the first 10 seconds (especially when significantly colder than room temp), then it peaks and hangs around its peak rating give or take a mW or two.
