In the diagram that was posted for the beams paths, i see a single quadrature revealer (or OEIC, if you prefer) ..... this constrain the designer to use a more complex system, cause all the 3 beams have to end on the same reading element.

But i've seen in some sleds, someone solved this problem and simplified the beam paths, just using 2 different readers OEIC's ..... means this, as "simpler optics" ?

FrancoRob, Is it possible for you to make a plot of the integral of the second graph? I believe it would simply be a Po/Pi graph. We have its derivative, but I think that if we can get its integral plotted, we may have a better idea of how to relate it to our typical mW/mA graph. If we can tie it all together properly, we should hopefully just end up with a simple calculus formula that could help us directly find a true efficiency (Po/Pi) from our simpler apparent efficiency (mW/mA) graph. Then we would have have to graph absolutely everything all the time. We could then just stick with our typical plots instead.

Since I was the one who recorded those graph points, I would not read too much into the "slight variations" in the slope of the data points.

The digital voltage readings were taken from the power supply directly, which only gives a tenth volt reading. I did check the voltage with a calibrated meter at the 350ma level, so I know that final data point is very accurate.

As Daguin has indicated, testing one of these diodes involves hours of work.
His voltage reading also are limited to a tenth volt resolution.

Instrumentation is not always accurate unless checked against an accurate, calibrated reference.
Most hobbyists do not have calibrated instrumentation.

Through multiple PM's it is becoming apparent that no one else has achieved the results I did with my first test diode. WE NEED others to do a slope test with theirs. They do not seem to be able to take a direct "hit" with 300mA. This may be even less. I would hate to see everyone burn out a diode that was capable of less by trying to equal my results.

If you have one of these diodes (s03), you are de facto part of the experiment. Treat it as such. So far we only have ONE slope test. I believe that EVERY OTHER diode has failed at high currents!

If you have one working at high current, please let everybody know.

unfortunately all three i had were hit with 310-330mA, and none have be able to output more than around 5mW, yet still generate a reasonable amount of heat.

it hurts.......it hurts alot. $100 a pop for a 5mw diode w00t

The two sleds I got both had problems. One with physical damage near the BR diode, the other had chemical corrosion near and on the BR diode. Diodes were run up from 0mA in my test setup, one failing at 140mA, the other at 180mA. Both LEDed. Never even got to see any power ... Obviously not the same as buying PHR or GGW sleds where the diode is almost always good.

Just got back from my short vacation, to find the "mystery diode" delivered and then this.. :cryyy:


I'm plotting mine today, i'll post the results ASAP. I was gonna put it on the cycler at a high current, to test the lifetime, now you made me worried if it'll survive the plotting at all.


But i'm gonna try to keep my hopes up. My supplier, while trying to sell me 10 of these, promissed that if i take them and they don't measure up to the expectations, said that i could return them! :thinking:

They seem to be very sure that they are 8x's. I guess we'll see soon enough.....


I should also order a 120/240mW diode of known specs ASAP and compare it to that.....

Ok, last night turned out to be impossible, as it took me till this very moment, just to answer the last emails and PMs that piled up during my short "vacation"..

But i just installed the diode, and will make a high resolution PIV plot, carefully watching out for any kinks...


I'll report back as soon as i can type the data into an Excel sheet...


Incidentally i also got sample diodes out of an 2x and a 3x BD Writer drive! They are useless for builds, but not for the knowledge they can provide!

I will also test those two today. To death of course.. :evil:

The safe current for the 8x is between 230 and 250 mA, I would choose 235 mA more or less.... (never more than 250 mA!)
(tough we could find the exact current meassuring the current that takes the diode placed into its original drive while burning a blu ray disc at 8x)

Here is what i got (click the thumbnail)...


The diode started out rather well, i was hopeful, but i won't be able to race it side by side with Dave's as it is now just an 11mW diode - at 280mA, where it popped, after producing 318mW through the 405-G-1 lens for a few seconds....


I do think the diode MAY be a little bit better than the GGW, but not the kind of better we were hoping for.

GBL actually already said what i wanted to suggest.
Problem is - the price...


I think these diodes might make for more reliable >200mW (= after plastic lens/more with glass) lasers than GGWs, without the need for special pre-selection and weeding out the weaklings, even with an occasional superfreak, which might reach 8x-like powers, such as Dave's....

EDIT: I mean, i don't like setting GGWs above 200mA, because i want them to last a year (or several) of normal pointer use.
But with these "8x" diodes, i would feel more comfortable setting them as high as 230 or maybe even 250mA, as GBL suggested.
They might even all be capable of reaching >200mW after plastics "safelly", something that is not the case with GGWs.


But they are definitelly not even close to the BDR-203BK which i had the pleasure of testing last night.... :cryyy:



If they were a little cheaper tho, i would consider buying them, as a replacement for GGWs, which are starting to BUG me severelly, with their inconsistency! I am getting stuck with more and more GGWs that can barelly push over 150mW at 200mA (some even peak as low as 138mW at 200mA)! :yabbmad:



Anyway, here's another $100 down the drain in the name of science (i have to console myself somehow, by now i could have made me two proper 8x's if i didn't do all these experiments)...
