PGL-III-C 589 125mW mini-review

Howdy All I just got my new CNI PGL-III-C 594 DPSS laser and man what a beautiful laser it is This is a replacement for a 593.5 that mode hopped like crazy. Glenn was more than helpfull in getting the first one replaced with this one.

It put's out the most beautiful golden beam, while the sticker says 589nm-594nm this one came with a model number of PGL-II-C-594.
This laser uses one 18650 cell and draws 2.57 amps when on and put's out a constant 125mW when it's cold as it warms up it drifts down to 98 mW then to 56mW then down to'

Huh maby I better stop now and see where this is going.

EDIT: Well it looks like at 60 seconds it still has 91mW and after about 75 seconds it starts to go down in power at 90 seconds is at 34mW. then after a period of cool down 5-10 min. it will start back up at 100+mW, I'm going to see how it dose in shorter bursts now.

I've never seen one of those or a real blue laser in person. Very cool looking beam on that, and shockingly high current draw relative to the output power. That thing must have a monster diode? I don't know exactly where 594 comes from, but it can't be a very efficient process to get it.

I am looking forward to seeing more of your review. Try to see if you can find a creative way to get a picture of the amber, blue, BR, red and green all together?

Yes it's a very beautiful golden color allthough it's kinda funny I have not seen this type of action from a dpss laser as I only have 532 types, it seems to be killer and even burns black plastic when its stone cold but gets weeker as it warms up ? my Vaisho 300mW is just the reverse.

Yeah, I've also noticed, from other people talking, that alot of 473s seem to do the same thing. It's not mode hopping or anything is it?

Good point. It's not a big deal for a healthy ICR 18650, but if you have a weak one you could be seeing voltage sag. Although, if you have a 500mW greenie, I'm sure you've got some good 18650's laying around. Maybe just for fun, try running it off a fresh IMR cell where you know you'll have more than enough current available & see how she responds?

Flaminpyro -- did you get this from Glenn's GB#7 ? If so, it *is* a 589, even if it was labeled 594. I've done comparisons with my real PGL-594 with diffraction grating... Or did you order a 594 directly from CNI?

Nice short little review + pics, but I seriously encourage you to Edit the title and contents of the thread to show that this laser is 589nm, rather than 594nm. There is currently no portable >100mW 593.5nm laser in existence, and none currently come close.

Are you sure there are no 594 nm lasers out there, may I ask how you would make me believe this claim at least maby you could explain why the manufacture of the laser would put a label on it like this.

this is the anti static bag it came in and that label showes it's serial number and it's power output right there next to the model number which includes it's freq in nm.
So did the mfr label this laser as a 594 but it realy is a 589 you don't have it in your hands but you are telling me this :thinking: come on spill your guts and inform us how this is realy a 589, Thanks !

I have checked the 18650 cell after each measurment and even changed it out with a new charged one but that is not the problem if there is one.
it dose not mode hope at all just a beautiful gold yellow steady beam it just reduces it's power slowly after about 75 seconds, I think I'll chart it with the laserbee and see what it looks like that way. also I'm at 780 ft above sea level I'm wondering if that could effect it.

Talk to Glenn about this. Cmak's not saying there aren't 594nm lasers out there -- there certainly are. Just not with this kind of output. The situation is, as of recent: All of our 589's for GB#7 were mislabeled 594, just like that, just like on your static bag. My PGL-III-C-589 was labeled as PGL-III-C-594.

I *have* an actual PGL-III-C-594, and the 594 is absolutely and definitely a different color, (to me there's no guesswork involved at all) and I've checked it through diffraction gratings: the dispersing beams are at different angles than the PGL-III-C-"594" I just received. (again, labeled 594 on the stat bag but it is definitely a 589.)

Also, in this case, in GB#7 we ordered PGL-III-C-589s. Ava from CNI even verified that they were mislabeled as 594s but were actually 589s:

I'd hope I could get Glenn in here to back me up on this; but, yes, absolutely, CNI has sent out a shipment of 589s labeled as 594s. Their 594s do not do this kind of power currently.

Did you order it as a 594? I mean, did you request 594 or 589? I dont know if you got this in GB#7 or not, but it still could have been part of the same batch from CNI.

I read this information on how complex it is to get yellow:

So I would think that it's common to have some instability...

If your getting that kind of power in a hand held with maybe 30 seconds stable, I would say that's pretty good!

Yes aryntha is quite correct, CNI verified they mis-labeled all the 589nm lasers as 594, and a true wl for the "other' older yellow is 593.5nm I have both, and both are "golden in color, it is only side by side with the output low , (can be accomplished with higher output w/ diffraction grating) or a reflection, but the 589 shows a slightly less orange gold color, as either is at a bright 20= mW they both will look more sun yellow and less orange, so when very bright the dot is hard to see a difference. So, I can assure all that the 589 nm lasers are the correct wl, just mis-labeled.
Also, the degree of refraction angle of 589 vs 593.5nm in a prism or diffraction grating proves which is which, providing you have both, as the 593.5 is refracted less than the 589. -Glenn

589 is different than 594. I know with 594, 1064+1342 are summed; and it's a lot more complex, but I have a feeling that with 589, that's not the case.

I'd love to find out what the process is for 589; but who knows, CNI may even have it patented...

My 589 is, to be completely honest, rock solid stable. In fact, I love my 589. I may have to get another...

I've been e-mailing cni lately and the strongest 594 they have is 20mW so I would assume that this is not 594, but 589.
