Sort of a review...

Optotronics RPL-B 473nm


I wanted to share with you laser enthusiasts this wonderfull opportunity i had by buying this handheld from a Forum member :) (DJNY)

It's like the title say's, the ''Optotronics RPL-B''

Shipping was very quick! 09.08.2013 arrived at 16.08.2013

now...

What makes this unit special is that it does more then what Optotronics offers on there webpage.
They sell up to 30mW, and of course you can have a slightly overspec one, but nothing like this.

The unit i'm showing here had a upgrade over at VIASHO, and a finishing polish by the one and only ''Lazeerer'' aldo perhaps the seller would like to chim in on the upgrade part as to what has bin done with it. ''i have actually no idea''

It does >100mW :drool:

This handheld from Optotronics is a light weight and high reliability laser that sure needs to be in anyones collection.
I luckily had this opportunity, and gosh what a fine piece of detailed art it is.

it's precisionaly machined from solid aircraft grade aluminium so it has a high strength-to-weight ratio.
It only weights 385gm / 12oz with a length of 200mm with the head being 40mm in diameter.

Inside all this sits a nLIGHT high reliability IR diode with a MTTF ''Mean Time to Failure" of 80,000 hours.
I'm not sure what IR pump diode is used as this very unit had a upgrade.
But i believe i've read somewere that it's 2.5W ¿ (don't quote me on this)

The beam divergence at full angle is according to the data sheet ''<1.00 mrad typically <0.9 mrad''.
And the beam diameter <1.5mm typically <1.4mm.

The transverse mode on this very unit is a solid TEM00 and doesn't change.
Ofcourse when buying one there is alway's the bad luck you end up with many modes ''mode hopping''.
But this unit stay's very fresh and clean :)

Duty cycle on this unit is suppose to be 5 min on with 2 min cooling down time, in a room that's 15 to 30 degrees celcius. aldo i'll stick to 2 min max ontime unless it was tec cooled or forced air.

To power on this unit you insert a key in the tailcap, and turn the key to the right so the LED indicator turns green. (It's like your about to fire a missle feeling ^^)
I like the fact that you can remove the key when it's in ''ready to go mode''.
After this you slide open the apperture shutter wich works just like any others except this one has it on the top of the unit.
Then just press the red momentary button ''LED will turn red'' and without delay the laser fire's it's beautiful 473nm (continuous wave) laser photons.

feeding this unit with power is done with a unprotected 18650 cell.
This, becouse the tailcap has a build in battery protection circuit providing over-discharge / under-voltage protection for lithium-ion cell.
*store your RPL with the battery removed sinds this circuit will eat current when not powered on*.
Also protected cells just won't fit with the tailcap all the way down.
The driver hooked to the diode also has electrostatic discharge protection.

When buying one of these from the Opto website, there's options like extendable warranty up to 18 months etc.., and lot's of other nice products to help you on your way.

Well that's about it ^^.
I'm sure most of you allready know most of these things, but i had fun writing this and it turned out into a mini review.

Another fine piece to add to my collection.

One question....
How is it that some DPSS lasers like it warm while others like it cold?
This can be the same wavelenght in question.

That's a beauty.

And yeah, the temperature thing, I have a 532nm that, unless you bake it first, does barely 10mW , its rated at 150mW?? :thinking:

I'm getting pretty excited for the 532nm 500mW RPL I bought from DJNY, pretty much same story, sent to Viasho for refurbishing, and polished by the man, Lazeerer. what beautiful lasers. and 100mW of 473 is amazing.

Oh man I love this color ! Nice Laser you got:yh:

On to that warm-hot question as most of you know a dpss consist of a pump diode a ND:YAG or ND:YVO4 crystal and a KTP or BBO .. all are changeing differently with temperature

the pump diode shifts its wavelenght with temperature but for optimal pumping it need to be exactly 808nm which a normal 808nm diode has at room temp any lower or higher temp result in efficiency loss (there are a few expensive diodes with locked wavelenght)

the ND:YAG or ND:YVO4 likes it cold so that efficiency increases with lower temp

Now what is the most common reason why dpss lasers "like it hot" is the KTP its efficiency increases with rising temp (until it reaches a special temp dont know it now) The KTP causes the most drastic change in efficiency in combination with temp thats why your handheld dpss like it hot ;)

In lab lasers all three elements are temp controlled by TEC and ceramic heaters for the optimal efficiency :beer:
