What do you mean by saying "They would probably give you something of equal price"?

The only green laser they have in stock right now that is 400mw is the 450mW New portable Green laser torch/IR filtered which costs 389$...

If they offer me this one as a replacement, be sure that I'll grab it.

Have you never heard the "Equal or less price" line before....

The probably would give you that laser if you were willing to pay the difference.

See if there is something else you like on the site, and ask for that instead.

Almost a month after I sent back to O-like my underspec 400mW Green Laser Torch, O-like emailed me today and said they have shipped the replacement and gave me a tracking number.

The thing that bothers me, though, is that prior to that shippment, I emailed Susie and asked her to test the power of the replacement to ensure the receiving of an onspec laser.

Well, she didn't reply to my last email, and what I got was only that laconic message about the shippment, without any reference to my request.

My concern is that she didn't measure the laser before shippment or that they ain't got any good lasers in their new stock, and as a result I will receive an underspec laser the second time.

What do you think?

P.s.,

All the issue of sending it back to China was quite a hassle and I don't think I'm gonna do it again.

I really don't think she lpmed my replacement laser either. All i got from her via chat was "will be >350mW".

If I run into the same situation again I'm just opening a paypal dispute... Now for all my paypal orders i put in something like "400mW laser, if less than 350mW, you will issue full refund, return shipping for defective item to be paid by you the seller."

If I recall correctly, your replacement laser is indeed > 350mw.

But what you're saying is basically that I've got nothing to do but hope for good.

A paypal dispute is no option in that case.

What intrigues me is what good it is for O-like to send a non measured replacement laser and take the chance that the customer will return it again?

After all, it's an hassle for them as well, isn't it?

It's actually ~450mW with ~50mW IR. Which is perfect IMO. It's just that she promised me a very overspec unit, so while they probably did check that it works, I highly doubt they went out of their way to actually LPM. Would have been nice considering 3 underspec lasers with two of them being defective.

Considering they have an LPM I really don't get the rationale with not testing in the first place. With replacements it's even more bewildering.

I do get the rationale with not testing in the first place. They assume that most people don't have a LPM or won't return it even if they had it measured and found it's underspec.

Don't forget that they want to sell lasers, so if they measure each one, they will have to take all underspec lasers out of the batch which means losing money. So they prefer to take the chance that one in a 10, 100, you name it, will return a laser.

What I don't understand is why they are taking a chance with the replacement.

You might be about to experience a world of hurt...

I had the same experience. I sent a very severely underspec unit back. Finally got a tracking number after I said I was going to collect the insurance from the US Postal Service.

Got back the unit shown in the pictures below.

You will note that this laser has no moving parts. I am almost certain (by memory) that back in April, the area that looks like a "ring", was indeed a focusing ring, which was somewhat stiff as I recall.

Well, now it is VERY stiff. It is integral to the waterproof front cap. It all comes out of the same mold. There are no moving parts.

It is not focusable.

And it has a big, ugly, blobby, very poorly collimated beam.

I am in the middle of a so-far unsatisfactory e-mail exchange with Susie, on the topic of "Please teach me how to focus the focusable laser that I bought from you".

I'll give them a chance, but once this settles down, I will post a COMPLETE review of this tawdry saga, with whatever recommendations I think are appropriate to make at that time, as to whether anyone in LPF should do ANY future business with O-like.

The brass area on the second picture is actually the focusing mechanism. It is a lens holder set on a spring.

The way the focusing mechanism on this last works is in the cap of the laser - top picture - the protruding brass piece in the center that looks like a pipe, pushes on the brass piece in the second picture with every twist.

You can probably eliminate some of the stiffness with any lubricant.

The focusing mechanism is rather unusual in this laser, and personally I don't like it, so I just leave the laser focused to infinity.

Doesn't look like anything is missing though.

See what happens when you gently push on the brass area in the second picture, just be careful not to touch the focusing lens.

On my unit, the mechanism is not functional. I just gave it a good try again, and there is no focusing response.

I'll try fiddling with it more.

In different news, I LPM'd this unit after my last post, before dinner tonight.

Entertainingly enough, the last unit that they sent me LPM'd at a peak of 130mW, but at least it focused well.

I can't get this laser to focus, but this is the LPM I took on this unit tonight (it peaked at 498):

Infinitus,

Thank you for your kind and helpful advice.

Taking the unit apart and analyzing it on the basis of what you wrote, I discovered what you wrote to be true. There is a deceptively-hidden moving part, and that part was bound up and not working right.

I took things apart with my spanner wrench, and polished the surfaces with emory cloth, and when I put it back together, it focused.

I believe that it still does NOT focus to as small a dot as it did in April, but it will do...

Infinitus, I suspect that your advice will help more than one other person here, who will soon receive one of these...

Happy to help:beer:

My laser actually doesn't focus that well either, but since I don't burn it's not really an issue. I actually used some teflon tape and adjusted it to an infinite fixed focus position... makes for a phenomenal pointer:D

I'm glad yours is overspec:)

Got my 400mW Green replacement yesterday.

LPMed it with a not fully charged batterty and it peaked at 423mw with an avarage of 378mw, so I guess it's ok and even a little bit overspec. So I have no complaints now.

Beam comes out at a slight angle, but it's not so bad. Dot is very bright, as supposed to be with a 400mw green.

All process of sending it back to China and receiving the replacement took a month and a half. Add to that the time it took for the first laser to arrive (the underspec laser from the original purchase) which took also a month, and here you go with two and a half month of hassle till you get finally what you paid for.

Exactly my thoughts also, the extra time spent testing prior to shipping would certainly help there credibility. I ordered one of these myself last week and should have it perhaps next month. My LPMs are waiting.
