This is a review of the "New Style" 100mW focusable pen from O-like. It's $70 plus shipping.
First impressions
The laser arrived in a black gift box inside an envelope. There were no additional protection. The laser looks pretty neat, it's all silver with thin grooves it it to enhance grip. The laser didn't come with batteries, so I had to take a walk to the store before trying it out.
After that I was ready to test the laser, but I couldn't find any manual on how to put the batteries in, and I was unsure if the laser had a reverse polarity protection. I guessed that the laser was case negative, and it was
Turning it on
The first thing I noticed about the laser was the bad focusing cap. It was loose and came a little dirty (there were imperfections in the dot when unfocused). Also, do not screw it completely out! The spring inside fell out, and when I tried to reassemble it it wouldn't screw all the way in, so I had to reassemble without the spring, which resulted in an even looser focusing cap.
The focusing cap looks like the one in regular aixiz modules, but I cannot be sure.
The dot is very unclean at distances.
Other than that there were no problems.
The does without fluoresce is hard too look at, it irritates the eye. It becomes much cooler to watch when pointed at something fluorescing, like regular paper, or uranium marbles.
Negative divergence up to several meters, example: when focused the beam diameter was 5mm at aperture, and 3.5mm at 3 meter.
Brightness
The laser is not very bright, as expected from a 405nm laser. I can only barely see the beam outside when dark, and either the laser has terrible divergence or the near-UV colour is f*cking with my eyes: I cannot see the dot at 100-200m distance even in the dark. I can barely see it at 100-75m, and then the dot looks several meters wide.
When I do see the beam, like in my room filled with smoke, the colour is very nice. It's a deep purple/blue, very hard to describe.
Burning
This laser burns less than a red dilda, of course, but it has the advantage of being able to burn any colour, even white.
It easily lights matches
It easily pops balloons
It burns white plastic
It burns my white wall
It burns white paper
It does not burn bare flash paper (Kind of disappointing, I was looking forward to ignite them without sharpieing. It instantly ignited the flash paper once it has been sharpied.)
Conclusion
This is a good laser, only decent build quality, but if you want a cheap blu-ray laser this is not a bad alternative.
