Re: Rayfoss Waterproof Laser Reviews

How far is the distance for the 1st measurement and how far to the spot?

Never mind I see it's 1 foot

I would go at least 10 feet for the far measurement.

Re: Rayfoss Waterproof Laser Reviews

I put a clear ruler at the aperture....like literally right in front of the focus part and the second dot was 1 foot away

Re: Rayfoss Waterproof Laser Reviews

Go out as far as You can with the spot. Focus at that distance, and try the numbers again.

I went out 4 feet and measured and this time it is 2.4....i am in my room at 1 am so I cant go to far and my room is the size of a computer room

Ok. Do the test when You can get more distance. The further the distance the more accurate the divergence test. 2.4 seems a bit high, but with such a short measure it's hard to extrapolate the true mRad.

okay, thank you for the pointers....how far a distance would be acceptable?

Re: Rayfoss Waterproof Laser Reviews

That's a matter of some speculation as to the preferred distance. I try to do mine at 25' or there abouts.

Re: Rayfoss Waterproof Laser Reviews

I have two measurements at 23'. One of them was measuring the beam leaving the aperture, and one of them was measuring the diameter of the glowing part at the aperture since part of the white cover(as seen below) glows red as if the entire beam is unable to pass through the aperture when focused to 23'.

1st measurement shows a 5mm dot at both aperture and 23' focused giving a divergence of 0. Which cannot be right I think.

2nd measurement gives 12mm diameter of beam hitting the inside of the aperture and 5mm focused to 23'. This gives me a divergence of .99mRad.....if this is valid that is still a BADASS divergence! I think I got a really good unit from Rayfoss!

Re: Rayfoss Waterproof Laser Reviews

Can You get a beam shot or is it to bright? If You can focus the spot to 5mm at 23' that's petty damn good in my book. You could do another check with a longer distance if You have the room. Might be hard to judge focus across a large distance tho.

Re: Rayfoss Waterproof Laser Reviews

I actually found a room that measured 34'5" long(connected to a hallway). After a bit of trial and error I actually got the dot at 34'5" down to 4mm....it took about 2 minutes of going to check, coming back, and minutely turning the focus. At aperture it was at 13mm....so I guess divergence gets better with distance? Because using that Calculator, that comes out to about .85mRad.....

PS-ya, I tried to get a beamshot but the only thing i have is my computer camera and the glare is nuts on it. :undecided:

I am no expert on diode lasers, but IMO it sounds like You got an excellent unit. Reds have been out awhile, so that such improvement is quite possible now days.

Focused to Infinity should have given a more parallel beam from the get go, but I still like Your readings

Me too! They advertise the beam to be <1.2mRad and mine is working out at .85mRad.....If only I had a camera!

Re: Rayfoss Waterproof Laser Reviews

One of the Vets may swoop in and tell Us the We are mistaken, but I think the numbers are right. It is a little bit subjective as to how someone reads the size of the beam at both points, but the mRad should still be ok since said fellow would use the same method on both ends. The difference in numbers should therefore be consistent.

Re: Rayfoss Waterproof Laser Reviews

I was just told by people on Laserchat that I should do it by focusing to infinity and measuring the beam at a foot away and also at 34'5". And this is where it gets weird: 4mm at 1' and 5mm at 34'5". I had to refocus so it wasn't the same but the div calc says it is at .098

And that shouldn't be possible....

Re: Rayfoss Waterproof Laser Reviews

1mm over 30'+ seems impossible to Me as well, but if You have rechecked Your numbers it is what it is. Someone will come along and explain it to Us soon I bet.

Re: Rayfoss Waterproof Laser Reviews

5mm not 1mm....but still, yes I checked and rechecked, and tried reloading the calculator in case something had messed up with my browser. Put it in in every different measurement system I could find. *mentally requesting a vet to stumble upon this*
