Default Medialas Megascan I50

The Specs :

Model Number: Megascan i50
Scan Angle: +/-70 Degrees
Deflection angle:
Scan speed:
Input:
Power:
Mirror aperture: max. 70° optical
up to 30,000pps with 5x10mm mirror
Analog +/-5V
+/- 24VDC to +/-30VDC @ 1.2A
3.5mm, optional 4.5mm
Mirror size:5x11mm
Mirror Type: Coated Aluminum
Mirror Reflectivity: >98%

Whats included in the box :
2 x Scanners
1 x MicroDriver board
2 x Scanner mount
2 x Cables driver to scanner
2 x Cables driver to PSU/input signals

Also a nice clean short user manual was provided.

These Galvo’s where shipped with the standard 5x11 mirrors.
Just slightly smaller than on the Laserworld scanners.
According to the manual these should be able to reach 30kpps at 8 degrees scan angle.

First impressions Drivers:

The first thing u notice when u remove the driver from the box.
Is that both drivers are very small and mounted on a decent size heat sink.
These drivers have a high quality look and feel about them.
Good quality parts and connectors are used on these drivers.
And the heatsink is more then able to handle the heat produced by the drivers.

Another very good thing about these drivers.
Are the connectors.
These are able to lock the cable into place on the driver.
But can also be easily remove again without the need of a screwdriver.
This makes installation and removal of the driver a breeze.

An other closeup of the connector locked in place

The drivers also have a onboard fuse on both drivers to protect them against over current.

These scanners allowe for easy tuning details about this are provided in the manual.

These drivers are also capable to drive the high-end CT68XX CT62XX Galvos

First impressions Galvo’s:

Can’t really say a lot about these.

The look like your generic style galvo’s
The do have a other type of connector on them.
Then what is normally found on galvo’s
Both galvo’s are properly labeled for x and y axis.
And the mirrors are fitted on the galvo’s axel without any glue.

These galvo’s are outfitted with the standard 5x11 mirrors
The mirrors have a high efficiently of 98 %.
This was also specified in the manual.
But this was also measured using my coherent laser check and
Using my 100 mw 532 nm Cni test laser I’ve only lost about 5-6 mw of power after all the mirrors.
So that’s pretty good.
The mirrors fitted to these galvo’s are broadband mirrors.
These are coated for a range of between 400 nm -700 nm.
So any visible light laser should work fine with these mirrors with minor losses.

The mounting block

Or should I say mounting stands.
These stands are simular to whats found on the widemove scanners.
The have a stirdy and heavy feel to them and the slide togerther easely.
Mounting can be done via de center hole and the slot on the end of the stands.
The allow for easy adjustment of the galvo’s and the mounting stands them selves.

Now for the important part

I’ll let the pictures do all the talking.
In most of the pictures u will see the ilda pattern.
Since this is still seen as one of the industries standard test frames for turning scanners.
But I’ll try to keep u awake with some other frames and movies to

Movie :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gtXQxqURDY

Pics :

8 Degrees @ 30 kpps

15 Degrees @ 15 kpps

8 Degrees30kpps

Stil very nice clean lines no round edges et etc
The image tilt is not causes by the scanners but is because of the door I’m projecting on !!

At 30k 8 Degrees

8 degrees 30 kpps

at 30k 8 Degrees

These scanners perform very well at all speeds and scan angles.
There are no obvious over or undershoots in the scanned output.
Frankly I’ve not seen such clean lines and alignment on any of the budget scanners.
This set comes very close to the high end ct scanners when it comes to alignment.
All the lines are perfectly aligned at all speeds and scan angles.
No distortions or over or undershoots are seen when running the scanners on their rated output and scan angles.

A 30kpps the scanners stay at normal room temp.
The driver does become pretty warm 43-50 degrees
But the highest temp I recorded was about 51 degrees.
And this was at 21 degrees room temperature running the amps and galvos for 1 hour

In most cases a new set of scanner might require some fine tuning to get everything looking just fine.
But these where already spot on.
For more info regarding Scanner / Galvo tuning see

http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...ead.php?t=3707
And
http://www.laserfx.com/Backstage.Las...Scanning1.html

Both are excellent guide for tuning your scanners and understanding how they actually work.

Conclusion:

So in conclusion.
These scanners seem to do the job perfectly without any problems

The price is 479 Euro’s so with the current exchange rate that’s
645 Us dollars
Or
424 Pounds

And that’s pretty good considering u still have to pay in access of 1200 dollars for a proper ct set.
Scanner performance is as advertised with the 5x11 mirrors installed.
The drivers work great and are easy to mount.
So overall I can recommend this set to anybody.
And it can compete just fine with the other top performers like the dt40 and even Ct

Hi,
What signal do you use to drive the motors? They usually have a +-5V but to a specific angle to you lock a pwm Value or something like that?
