Hi, I brought a 50mW green laser in the LZCS host from Lazerer and I think I'll review that. I apologize in advance if the photos are crappy, I have a crappy phone camera. And this is my first review, so please go easy on me.

Laser in question:

1. Shipping/Service/Background Info

I've been contemplating buying one of these things since beginning of April, and finally decided to buy the 50mW one on May 5th. (I decided that spending $10 more for sqrt(2) times the beam brightness isn't really worth it, and this is probably safer to use for showing off) When I tried to order from Lazerer, there is no payment options available (broken website?), then I waited a few days, and payment options became available but no credit card option was available. I personally think it's stupid to pay a $20 bank transfer fee for a $50-$60 laser. I used the contact form on their website, and tried every day to see if there is a credit card option available.

On the 10th of May, credit card option became available, and I put down an order for the laser (incidentally, Max from Lazerer replied to me the next day telling me credit card is available…), The process is very streamlined, and their website worked well. Credit card payment was typical (pretty much the same process as how I pay for my server in Europe). I didn't need to call or email anyone, and on the 12th of May, the laser was shipped. It left Hong Kong on the 15th of May, Customs had it for less than 1 business day (3 hours total, long weekend involved, so it was actually in the customs building for 3 days), and Canada Post delivered it today (1 day over night delivery, WOW). Side note: I had wayyy too much laser jitters over this entire time frame…, can't seem to order and forget…

I've paid $5 for shipping, I counted up the stamps and came up with this:
48.1 Chinese yuan = 7.76116711 Canadian dollars
So it's actually a really good deal.

Here's a picture of the box, note that it is labeled as a flash light at USD20

Here's the bag inside the box:

2. Inside the box
This is the typical "GREEN LASER POINTER" box that is shipped with everything. The box is slightly scuffed up, but since it came from the other side of the world, this is not that big of a deal.

Here's a picture of the box:

Here's a picture of the contents of the box:

The included batteries are actually 3000mAh UltraFire cells, I haven't seen anything above 2600mAh for ultra fire on the forums, so we'll just have to see if they are properly labeled. If they are, I am SO happy. The charger is your typical cheap charger that we all have come to love.

Here's a picture of the battery in question:

3. The Actual Laser
It's a good feeling host, the threads all go perfectly, without the crappy squeaking sound, feels good in the hand, could use work in the looks department, but this gets the job done. The strap comes with it too.

It comes in 3 sections, you can take out the middle piece to put in a 16340 battery. Or put in a full 18650 battery. I prefer the longer configuration. There's a key slot on the back, momentary switch to turn on the laser, all fairly standard stuff.

Here's a pic of a size comparison of the laser with a cheap ebay green, a DMM, and a keyboard.

The focusing ring is very smooth, all the way out is unfocused, and all the way in is a tight beam. According to the power certificate, this laser came in at 68mW, with 5mW of IR (fairly nicely over spec). I have tried to burn the black plastic it came with, and it punches through like nothing's there. Interesting note, if you point the laser through the black plastic, you get to see some really freaky patterns like on the PLM (polarized light microscope), wonder if it's deflecting off the amorphous domains of the plastic…

Here's a pic of the power certificate:

The batteries didn't come fully charged, so all the pics I've taken of the laser is at half battery, so be aware of that. The dot is very VERY clean, (can see it's a perfect round circle when putting it on unfocused and shining it far far away). I cannot provide beamshots even if the battery is full, because my crappy camera (webcam quality) will not operate in the dark without producing too much grain.

One little thing I don't like is the misspelling on the warning label, they spelt FROM, EROM. I'm probably just a bit too sensitive about this since everyday I walk past the physics building with giant laser labels, and flashing lights next to them. (so when they do it wrong, it feels a bit uncomfortable).

4. Conclusion
Good Service (didn't need any after purchasing, that's the best service ever)
2012-05-10: ORDER
2012-05-12: SHIP
2012-05-15: Left Hong Kong
2012-05-18: Mississauga Customs (3 day long weekend)
2012-05-22: My door

Typical box, 3000mAh battery, cheap charger
Good focusing action, not bad host, looks kinda average, but very good quality
Laser is fairly over specced, warning label spelling mistake

Overall, I'm happy with this thing, can't wait to show it off! I'm probably going to go for a 1W 445nm laser for my next one (crap, I'm hooked), when I have disposable income again.

Nice detailed review :gj:

10 days from shipping to your door, that's fast. Especially with a Long weekend.

I just hooked up a DMM from the positive end of the battery to the host, and it measured 0.46Amps, furthermore, the probes from the DMM got hot...

The battery is 4 volts, from V=IR, R is 8.69Ohms.

Power dissipation is P=I^2R, which in this case is 1.838 Watts

Is this normal.... (excuse the nooby question)?

I personally have never dealt with ANYTHING that outputs more than 100mA...

I also have this laser and I am very satisfied with it. It smokes just about any dark material when focused and if shined on the skin unfocused I can feel slight pain after about 5 seconds.

On a side note take great care not to dirty the lens as it is buried deep inside and very difficult to get to and thus clean.

I was pleased enough with this laser to go ahead and buy another from Lazerer, this time a 200mw 405nm with the same host.

I ordered this laser a few days ago, still making its way to the US, but i'm actually really fond of how the case looks, and im especially happy with the safety lock (I have younger siblings that would KILL each other with it :fightin:)
