Nice! I just got my single cell version MS-SSW today, not sure what Im going to build in it yet, most likely a 9mm though.

Glad to hear you got your's, Eradicator! I won't make size comparison jokes.

Did your's come w/ the 2.2A driver too? This would make an excellent home for a 9mm. If I didn't already have a 9mm Kryton coming when Sinner and I talked about this one, I'd have gone the easy route. As it is, I wanted a one-of-a-kind build for my permanent collection.

I have no idea what I am going to do with my MS V5 yet...

I am very impressed and thats a lot of heatsinking for PL520, the new setup with X-drive would be amazing imho.. You can literally never turn the laser off if you want!

Keep up the good work man! :kewlpics:

+1 if it lets me!

I understand the importance of heatsinking these high powered lasers now. Last night I fired up Daguin's 445nm pocket monster for the first time to take some pictures. Wow, must remember to observe duty cycles with these smaller hosts. Brilliant choice SBA, love the heatsinking and long duty cycle you got. Oh and some excellent work on your part Sinner, as always.

Well, not counting the regulation drop out with the driver, by charge capacity and current use alone, I'd have a little over 26 HOURS between charges.

Diode Vf @300mA will be 6.9V and I believe the non-regulation would start when batteries reach 7.5V which actually means you're still in regulation with full current untill your batteries are drained to 3.75V Each.. Means you'll be in regulation and at full current 90% of the charge if not 95%..

Also the 20h duty cycle of regulated current , and epic green is something to be proud of.. Now just waiting on the detailed build pics!

Nope, no driver in it, just the bare host, but, I did realize what I am going to use it for. I may have to wait a little bit, but my MS-SSW is going to be the home for a 1W green diode as soon as they are available (for a reasonable price). And now, the waiting game.

1W Direct Green Diode?? Jesus man...keep polish handy. Because after that many years, aluminum rusts!

You might as well get some fun out of it anyway. you can swap diodes in the future..

What research I've done suggests that the current price of these diodes, combined with their inherent brightness means that there will not be: a) A significant drop in prices for some time, b) there is no current demand for green diodes at such high outputs.

Now, that's not much research, but it doesn't bode well. :cryyy:

Nichia has been working on them a while they already "exist" just not buyable in our market. IIRC thorlabs was selling them for about 4k a pop.

They definitely have a use in video projection, 50-100mw diodes aren't enough.

With the arrival of these single mode greens, it wont be long before they improve the technology, and release a multimode diode. I honestly think we might see them by the end of the year, but thats really just a baseless guess.

One thing I have noticed about technology, it continues to move forward at a very rapid pace, sometimes even when its completely unnecessary to move forward. They will come, I can feel it. LOLOLOL im done now.

Now question....
What would be the big advantage of buying a 1W multimode green laser or a DPSS 1W green? I mean they are both multimode and both get 1W out, I know that the diode might have a much more linear power output but other than that?

The one big advantage I know of is operating temp. This diode was chilled during testing, and still functioned. It dropped more voltage and the wavelength shifted a little, but it still lased.

DPSS greens don't respond so well to ambient temp changes, especially cold. I've seen at least one thead where someone wanting to use a green laser as a target sight for their rifle was trying find a way to warm it. He was trying to use nichrome wire to make a heater to warm it up enough to come on.

Yeah, sometimes, there's just need for a diode...I mean, come on...nichrome wire setup to warm up a pointer? At what point does the pain in the ass of the build equal the cost of the diode build? It could certainly be done cheaper than what I've done here!

Different wavelengths, more stable, easier to build, more durable, longer life, more easily repaired.

I have bad luck with DPSS lasers and its a finicky dumb technology and I hate it. Almost every DPSS green Ive gotten is completely unstable, mode hops, and breaks entirely too early.

I just prefer diode lasers. And once it is being mass produced, it will be worlds cheaper than a DPSS 1 watt.

^^ What he said too.

I know, right. To be fair, this was before the pl520 became available, so he was working with what he had. Now he could put one in a pen host and strap it on his rifle and have a reliable sight.
