Default Jetlasers's Pistol Dazzler Review

Had my eye on one of these for about a year so I finally decided to pull the trigger, "pun intended." Got the 600mw version. It uses a dpss 532nm module. Runs on two 18650 batteries in parallel in the handle. Has a external input next to the safety switch ( see picture ). Uses 5 volt input. To use you push the on/off switch than push the button on the rear of the unit and hold down you will hear the electronic focus engage which will enlarge the divergence until fan out to be about 2 feet at 30 feet distance, the farther away the farther it fans out. It has two modes, a flashing and a constant on. Has two led lights on the rear. One turns green when you turn the unit on than red when you engage the dazzler. Don't know what the other ones for but guessing it's for the external input. It's made of plastic, but seems well built. Dismantles easily and go together as easily. Havn't had a chance to take it out to the desert yet to play with it, but hopefully soon. Over all quite happy with it. Don't know how much use it will get but just had to add one to my collection.

Hope you enjoy the pics.

New Pics of the dazzler compared to the JL mini;

The last two pictures are of the JL mini and the dazzler both focused to infinity. Hope it helps give you an idea.

Thanks BtG, it's just basically a collectors item. I'll keep it locked up like all my units. Probably won't use it much, just when I go camping to keep Bigfoot at bay.

Thanks Radim, it probably be awhile before I get to take it out and see what's it's all about. Going to have to be real careful with it. But a little responsibility is what's needed. I'll bump the thread when I get some testing done.

Very interesting piece. I've always thought they were really cool, but couldn't afford to buy one just for collection value. My fear is that somebody would think I had a real gun with a laser attached and call the cops on me or something worse.

That was a concern of mine also Razako. It's listed as a nonlethal weapon and is not illegal like a taser. But it could open a can of worms, so I won't bring it out much. Just to add to my collection show a few good friends. I'm guessing collectors all have something that's really special to them they keep just because. Have pretty much completed my collection so to finish it off I picked one up. Besides now I'm armed for Bigfoot

Edit @ GSS. Yes, it can be focused to infinity, can even burn with it. Turns into a laser when needed/wanted, which is pretty cool, forgot to mention that in my review. for reminding me .

What is a "Dazzler" and what makes it different from what we think of as a laser ?

Is it a fanned out laser that flashes but can't cause any permanent eye damage to the subject it used on ?

Thanks for the review, I've always wanted to see what the hec this thing was Like BowtieGuy said, be careful with that thing. Not only from a laser sense, but from a gun sense.

Thanks Radim, it probably be awhile before I get to take it out and see what's it's all about. Going to have to be real careful with it. But a little responsibility is what's needed. I'll bump the thread when I get some testing done.
ROFL - Bigfoot. It would definitely work for my old friend deer alpha male as we meet quite often during my night forest crawls.

And take your time for tests. I think it is quite a challenge to get appropriate test method. Do not forget to mention it with many details as it is something what would interest many members here as well IMO. Usually we try here to prevent eye hit, but this thing is designed for that and supposed to be safe. Well, really challenge to test it and not to use real eyes to be safe - just in case.

Use a search engine. Type "laser dazzler". JL has vids on YT.

Agree-- Nice review and pictures.
Nice unit but be exceptionally careful with it for several reasons. It can cause permanent eye damage easily at 600mW depending upon distance of target and not much chance, if any, of saying it is a pointer and not a weapon due the pistol dedicated form unlike the PL-E dazzler with manual focus if looked at by authorities.
It should be treated like any other 600mW laser safety-wise. A dazzler is just a defocused laser which creates a large dot with lower power density mW/sq. cm than a fine focused beams dot--engineered for greater divergence rather than less.
Theoretically can be used to flash blind without cause eye damage, however, I suggest it never used it as it was intended/created to be used for several reasons --aimed at eyes of humans or animals as tempting as trying it out might be.

The issues of eye safety, liability, and other legal issues are no different for laser dazzlers than they are with any laser.

Law enforcement in USA does not use them because of liability issues. US military dazzlers are generally 200mw output range.

THe UN issued a Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons. It came into force on 30 July 1998. As of the end of April 2016, the protocol had been agreed to by 107 states. see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protoc..._Laser_Weapons

"The current difficulty with these weapons is meeting the “sweet spot” to disrupt vision and not cause permanent damage.

Thanks EP. Kinda looks like a Beam Expander only fatter. Sweet especially when it's in the constant on mode ( not flashing) Will try to get some night night beam shots when I can.

Yes it's suppose to have some really long battery life, can understand why. Did you find my edit where I answered your question about whether you can focus it to infinity? Will try to post some pics of it burning. Doesn't seem to focus to a point but with this many mw's she burn when focused to infinity.

You pretty much got the science of the Dazzler concept.

Thanks Steve; Yea Bigfoot has met his match . It will be weeks before I get to take it out and to some proper testing but I will bump the thread when I do.
