For a ~2V forward voltage of IR, using 8.4V of battery will need a carefully designed driver IMO, 6.4 drops of voltage will generate much heat with some ACC buck driver

Yes, it heats quite a lot. Still it is a high powered DPSS, so higher voltage can allow you to use batts with higher internal resistance (lower current is needed).

its for the aliexpress review on their site and aliexpress seller!

What i'm trying to say was, every seller in aliexpress need to do some research before just sending those 2x16340 which they thought was a real power source of those laser.

of course when the buyer is not informed either, there would be loss on both side e.g the seller lost the goods/money if the buyer returned a broke laser, even with refund, buyer will lost its time.
in addition, the buyer might completely trust that the battery comes with laser is its real power source which is 100% compatible, that's just sad :(

Actually i didn't realize that my sentence was ambiguous :banghead:


Speaking about ambiguous things related to battery,
I had a bad experience back then with 16340 battery.
As we know that there are two types of 16340, it's LiFePO4 3.0V rated and Li-Ion 3.7V rated.

When i ask the seller which voltage is needed in my laser, they simply answer both 3.0V and 3.7V are working.
AND THEN ....
Turns out the driver couldn't handle the Li-ion ones. This was my own conclusion as i get replacement twice and all dead using 3.7V (Using 3.0V is fine though)
After the second replacement laser was dead, decided to not fill complaint anymore as i will spend money sending the laser back to them. :(

There is a reason i used 3.7V, it's because it gives me an overspec'd result compared to 3.0V which gives me fairly underspec'd result.
however when using 3.7V, i noticed a hotter host surface when operating the laser.

It's laser from skylaser.cn (laserbtb.com) btw

Yup, unfortunately the seller's are just that.
I have put a 10440 with a spacer in cheap ebay pointers rated for just 2 AAA's at 3V and they work just fine, even in the newer all plastic lens and AL body moduled ones. How long they will last who knows, but not a big loss on a $2 pointer.
Fastech for example sells a 3V 532 module and a 5V 532 module. The only difference I see is the size of the module itself and it seems different only because they are made for replacements for some type or another host.
If I knew I would get more mw's with the Li-on's I would sure use them, but seeing you toasted one with 3.7 now makes me think.:undecided:

That is interesting 3 V or 3.7 V is not much difference. This should not be a problem to handle. Skylasers were not even cheapos (not sure if they had not some cheap series), I would expect they could handle it
Anyway when 3.7 V Li-ion is fully charged it goes to 4.2 V, when going low but still working it might be like 3 V what I've seen. Below it was likely too low to run the laser or protection stopped the current. So basically there should be a range where it should work well...

My Sky Lasers greenie work several years already although it is not best laser on market and there are some things which should be improved, but it is decent. I like the host and mainly it still works quite well. Just some problems with batts and once with button stucked, when I could not switch it off. But after it cooled down it returned to work. So maybe I exceeded a duty cycle too much (might happend during laserpainting). The fact is it is still working and as my first serious laser I love it somehow...
