Your camera seems to be decent and capable doing much better macros.

Try maximum optical zoom and then get as close as you can, instead of going very close without zooming. Then , crop out everything you don't need, and then of needed resize:

Over 1 W after optics is really too much for that host. No matter the material of heatsink, I think the duty cycle will be far from "decent". Copper has enough troubles radiating heat into sorroundings as it is.

Your driver will overheat from excessive current, and start strobing after a few seconds of use.

Your battery, if not highest quality available, won't stand that much current draw which is around 1.5-1.7 A (modest estimation), not for long at least.

I'd decrease that.

Nice solder work, though.

then yea, but thats not typical in these 445nm builds IMHO. 1 min on 1 min off would be sufficient for this unit IMHO.

The heatsink is for this build solid copper the entire length of the module doesn't get much better for a handheld unit. The battery is at this time the only choice we have for hand held unless you want to tube another.

The only thing I see a problem with is the diode looks to be hanging out the back of the Aixiz module... it's not flush or pressed in, it is just hanging out the back.

Plexus I know its a pain to rectify, but you need to press that in a little more.

I have my 445nm build running for 3-4 minutes at the time, without driver going strobing, or any problems what so ever.

Camera skillz? Eh, I am beated by Traveller by few lightyears for that matter :D

I do take pride my my soldering skillz though.

The scraping off of the resistor is optional... see were it says "or scraped off". It still has to be bridged to the pad with the resistor there or not for the max sett.

I don't think you'll kill either the driver or the diode at that current. As long as you don't go pushing the driver into thermal shutdown too many times it should be fine as it would be working within limits.

The meter readings say a peak of 1,308mW but you claim 1,500mW? I'm not doubting it, as with a Jayrob 405-G-1 lens this is entirely possible, but some might question it.

Nice clear photos though and well documented!

It isn't. That is the closest it can get. It will do decent macros from a zooming perspective but that is as close as I can get. I've had digital cameras from one of the first ones in 1996, the Kodak DC100 I think it was. And before that I shot 35mm and 120 film. Just letting you know I know what I am doing. :)

I need to get a better camera for macros however. The one I use is great for low light but not that great for close up macros.

It actually has a a duty cycle into the minutes before there is any over heating. As I said I will do some testing and report the data back. I also want to compare this to the jayrob copper HS design which I have on the bench. So more to come. But for now, it actually works pretty well. It doesn't start to over-heat too soon and there is enough time to have some fun with it.

I am using AW 2600 protected. I am still on the first battery I put in it. I would estimate that the battery has seen about 30 mins of use so far. Again, more data once I can run some tests. But so far, so good.

I wanted to crank this up because I find (on here) most people turn down the juice. So, lets see what this diode, host and HS are capable of. And also as I said I will do the jayrob build in the same host and compare.

Don't mean to be lazy or a smart ass, but google it. you will find the manufacturer. What I did first thing was to get that lasorb on the diode so I could mitigate any ESD while I was working. As you can see I had to shave off the corners on one side to make room for it and the driver. I think its a good approach.

Hey jander. thanks for the compliment. the trick to soldering like this is controlled heat, good eutectic solder, ensuring the parts are heated before you apply the solder, apply the solder to the parts not the soldering iron tip and doing it quickly.

As for the diode, I see your point and will get around to pressing it in further.

Also, you can see I soldered the case pin to the anode but later realized this was not necessary so the case pin has been disconnected electronically.

Thanks morgan. Your observation is correct. The meter reading shown was after I had it on for a bit. I will post a pic of the metering from a cold start and we'll see what the peak is. I have been getting ~1.5W dropping down immediately to a sustained ~1.1W. But i'll do a plot tonight and post.

The current was set to ~1300mA using my dummy load. I am not sure of the actual current to the LD.

I googled .. and found nothing. Even if I did find something, I would like to know where did you get them from, so I can compare. What's wrong with simple questions these days ?

I found some lasorbs, but none specially for 445nm. Even on this site, you must go inside a PDF to see which lasorb is best for this diode. But thanks ! I think I'll order few ..

When I ordered them, I was told the 445nm Lasorbs were not available but the blu-ray version (833 i think) would work perfectly fine for 445nm laser diodes, so that is what i am using.

L44-47-121-683-X, called Blue-optimized LASORB with 4 microsecond surge conduction time (on this page https://www.pangolin.com/orders/lasorb.php) seems to cover the working voltage of 445nm better. But yes, the blue-ray should work too. AFAIK lasorb should actually have no problem with lower voltage anyway.
