I have found a way to open this type host without damage. You need 2 pieces of wood with hole in between. The diameter of the hole must match the head of the laser pen. Then use a clamp or a vice to hold the head and pull the body of pen out.

I don't need 300mA to power the diode. According this information , http://laserpointerforums.com/f65/post-your-ma-mw-51432-10.html#post728480
the laser will work at minimum 7mW. I think 85mA is enough but I am not sure.
At this powerlevel any laserpen host will suffice.

That doesnt work on the blues, sure you will get the cap off but the diode and driver are sunk in about .5 inch. So you will get the cap off but the diode and driver are in there very snugly. Works on the greens since the diode/lens assembly is much longer due to the crystals needed to produce the green laser and therefor fills the area up to the cap.

Thanks! Haven't had the opportunity to take a 405 apart yet. They are in the same host as the greens though.

Your thread link says it starts lasing at 3.77V, it doesn't say what current. No 445 diode I know of will lase at 85mA. the threshold on them is around 200mA but it's going to be unstable right at threshold, it being hot or cold will mean it might lase or it might not.. That's why I said you need a driver that will do around 300mA, to drive the diode enough that things like temperature won't be a factor of it working or not.

Ok, so I finally got around to dissecting their green pen. First, it's a bitch to get out of the barrel. Press fit all the way. And yes, I buggered the end of the module trying to get it out of the barrel.

Here's the whole module, unscrewed. I am sure that there was a spring between the DPSS xtal module and the output lens assembly on the right.
Things went POING when I unscrewed it. The spring has jumped to another dimension somewhere. The threads on the pump diode module (left) allow the adjustment of the focusing distance to the output lens.

Next, DPSS crystal module and intermediate lens. If it's a two xtal DPSS, then one of them has to be very very small (like the size of the input mirror on the right).

Since the only thing holding the xtal module in alignment with the pump diode is spring in the module, it may be possible to tweak a cranky pen back into operation. But that would mean getting it out of the barrel.
Possible, but not fun.

Eh, your pen is a green laser pointer and this is Blu-Ray pen thread...
But it is always nice to see the innards. They upgraded the switch. It used to be a white smaller switch that easily break after intensive use. The module is aluminium in stead of copper.

ALL green DPSS lasers use two crystals. Either a ND:YAG or ND:YVO4 to turn the 808 to 1064nm, and KTP to double the 1064 to 532nm.

That green module is different from the ones i've gotten though. All mine have been brass, not AL. And Blord, you won't see copper modules/heatsinks in cheap chinese lasers. Cost is too high and it's fairly hard to machine. Brass is usually the most common material used.

Yes, my mistake. I mean brass instead of copper. The pens are still on the heavy side.

I added this to the $9 ebay BluRay thread because a number of folks on this thread bought the violet/green combo deal from this seller. This unit is that green pen.

And yes, all the parts shown are aluminum.

The same seller has green modules for sale and they are brass. However those modules have a front-adjust lens and the rest of the module is crimped closed :-(

The greens i've got from itemquickship have all had brass modules in them,

Not sure what you mean by crimped. all the modules i've seen from them have been machined with a threaded lens assembly.

Here's a pic -

On this one, the diode holder is threaded into the barrel and the whole back side has been crimped slightly, making it really difficult to unscrew.

That's different from the ones i've opened. I'll carry my camera to work tomorrow, or bring home the bag o guts and take some pics.
