Theoretically, how long could you run one of these things in a room temperature environment continuously? I have no experience with lab-style modules, and I recently registered at PL and saw a guy running 2 open cans mounted in blocks of aluminum for 5 weeks straight. What would you expect the duty cycle for one of these to be?

they should be 100%

I was bored today, så i decided to try my Senkat module with that driverboard, so i used alligator clips, clipe'd them on, hot glued on top of that, took wire and just made a knot around the clips and taped them with black tape, and then i took the wires going to the 70mW diode and just taped them to wires of my Senkat, and it works great :p
Feeding the driver with 3.7v 350mA nokia charger still, works great, but i think i could get it a bit stronger with a better power adapter :p Pops balloons easy at 5 meters or so, lights matches as long as i focus it in a little spot. I think i had it on around 10 minutes before i felt it got warm, then i let it cool for some minutes. Works great, a little offtopic because i use Senkat diode, but anyway ut works :p

I've tried modding the ouput current as Mike described, but putting a resistor paralel with R5 has no effect as far as i can tell... but that should be so hard to figure out to get right.

Also: For people who want to run this unit off 12V using a heatsink on the transistor: Don't! I've found several capacitors rated 10V in the unregulated part of the circuit, which could easily pop when fed too high a voltage.

Does anybody have the 35mW Green module from DX?

I just received mine today, as well as the 70mW red module.

I was wondering what kind of current draw you are getting with the green module?

Right now, right out of the box, it is drawing 400mA and capable of instantly burning a hole in a highly reflective black film when focused.  Being highly reflective, about 40% of the beam is being reflected off the film, however it still burns instantly.

What kind of power has been measured at what current with the green module?

My red module will allow me to adjust to 350mA. It was at about 260mA as received. It too will burn through the film instantly at the 260mA when focused however maintaining a "cut" is slower than with the green.

Why oh WHY, did they use the optics they used in the red one to end up with such a large beam!!!!

I can also see with the red one that the diode is off center as the brightest spot in the beam spot is close to the edge.  I will try to re-align later.

Thanks!!!

Whats the current draw at 75mW?

I took mine apart and it is slightly different. Mine has a concave-concave lens as opposed to a plano-convex as you stated your has. It also has an aluminum ring attached to the output end of the lens.

This thing will cut a piece of electrical tape clean through with no focusing at all and no mod to the driver!!!!

Check out this video of the red one cutting a piece of 3mm gray depron foam. With the lens im using it will cut through to about 2.6-2.7mm at this speed. If I had a better lens and modded the driver im sure it will cut all the way through at about the same speed.

Well, I just killed my red one somehow. I was driving it at 290mA for a while and it just went dim and it wont come back!!!!!!!!!!!

That's exactly what happened to my 70mw version. I had it running fine and then one day I turned it on and it put out an extremely dim red glow.

I was previously powering it with 320mA for at least 30 minutes without a single hitch.

It happened when I picked the laser head up and moved it. If this had an effect, I dont know, but its sure dead now.

I will rip it apart and see if it is a loose connection that killed it.
