im thinking of making this into a porable laser in a radioshack project box with a swicth and a 4aa power supply would this work????

AIRPLANES BEWARE ? wtf!!!!

Anyway, can anyone confirm that this thing has TTL input, and that the green one has an IR filter ?

well, we can neither confirm nor deny the existence of an infra-red filter on said 'green' premises...



short answer is i dont think anyone knows

UPDATE:

Tried the laser module yesterday with a more powerfull 5.7v 880mah psu. And VIOLA :D focus adjusted it ripped through a blue plastic bag instantly (full power on the pot) at a distance about 1m (+3 feet). I tried to put my black mousepad infront of it and it started smoking right away. I slowly moved it and it made a 5cm long line almost like you made a cut with a cardboard cutter!

So i guess - yes! It's 100mw+ which makes this great value for the money!

I put mine into a project box and have it running off 4AA .
Its a little big to call portable but it works for me.
Best $17 ive ever spent would love to see what sombody with a tester measures these at.
I would say over 100mw easy as it can burn cut and light as fast as my 18x diy running at 300ma.
I have allready ordered 2 more as backups in case they are harder to get later.

Going to Order the green one as well when i get the money ;D

So did you guys just connect batteries or a PSU power connector up to the power input of that board that it comes with, or something else?

Sorry, I should've been more specific. Some of the laser + boards specify that they use an AC source, so I was wondering if a plain DC power source (batteries or PSU) would work fine, or if it was connected to the cord going straight to the laser block or to the board itself (appears to be the latter). It'd just be more convenient to use a DC source than get a doorbell transformer or something.

I'm more than willing to test the output power on anybody's lasers here to verify output power. I now have a thermal power meter and can test any lasers output power.

Would cost me more to send you mine than it would to buy you one from dx and have them ship it heh

I got my DX100 mW red today ..... I'm powering it with a small 6V gell cell.
Wait almost 8 seconds for the ramp up on.
It output about 67 mW showing 220 mA draw. Phooy -- I had to mess with the pot !! ---- 50 mW at 200 mA, 75 mW at 250 mA and the pot maxed out at 260 mA with 87 mW. The 260 mA figure agrees with Chimo's findings.

The module pushes out easily and the focus ring is not glued. I focused it to 4' and popped a balloon quickly. I'm sure this module could be modded to go over 260 mA without problem. Lots of mass heatsinking available with this.

Now the question of the day: Maybe I missed it but my driver board has a 3 wire cable coming from the front near the drivers. TTL input ??

Finally got mine.  It works nicely with my SparkFun 5V power supply  (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=114 for anyone interested).  

Right out of the box, or should I say bag, the board draws 196mA from the power supply, which is conveniently within the range of my el cheapo multimeter.  However I was not able to burn a sharpied post-it I stuck to my wall, even when it was focused on it for a minute or so.  So I touched the pot just a little bit (maybe 5 degree turn) and its output is definitely stronger and it burned holes in the paper quickly.  

This is definitely cool and makes me want to get the green one too.

Good info. So from what everyone has said, the David Lanling one is a better module for around the same price. I do like the looks of the DX heatsink. I think this is a great platform for a labby with an open can.. ;D
