I bought two of these units and they both changed after some short time in use.
#1 started at 11Mw but now is only running at 8Mw and developed a werd optical thing around the dot :scowl:
#2 started at 24Mw but now is only running at 22Mw but looks just fine.
these test were taken with the original batterys first then new cells (1.6v) were installed and the measurments were repeted, same results.
10 more are on the way we'll see how they do !

Peace Pyro...:eg:

What I find with my true 50mw(which freaking hurts to look at the dot on any surface, great laser) is that if I take a q-tip and rip of some of the cotton, put it in the end and rub it around on the lens dry fairly hard, then go gentler and eventually pull it out the optical thing around the dot you speak of will vanish if you did it right, it takes practice though, it's a pain in the ass. I can't say anything about the 5mw though, btw from a post DX has been shipping some shittier trues lately with a green beam on the warning label as opposed to red, they suck, highly overrated. I was lucky and got a good one though, so people don't give up. We know that if we complain enough DX listens most of the time. :) As for the 5mw I don't know how well that works, complaining to bring back something that wasn't in the description:shhh:

Very informative thread! It is hard to believe how many of those cheap-o-lasers actually run at a respectable level of power for the price! Granted, yes, it does probably spew IR, gets hot fast, and has a short life. It is still a considerably good deal!

The reason for that is..................... the Laser Restriction in the USA...

If I as a Chinese seller can no longer touch the Huge USA Market with anything
over 5mw... then I will sell any of my under 50mW labeled as 5mW...

It is business............ That's all...
Cheaper to dump them..... than keep them in stock................

Update:

Hey I read that these lasers eat batteries. So a friend *John Law* sent me some Duracell Procells with mine. They worked great but as usual the laser started to dim after a short time and then die. The second set did exactly the same. So I let the laser sit for a while. A few weeks ago I started to change the batteries. and I accidentally pushed the button as I was opening it and the laser flickered. So I wiggled the button and it started to blaze like it was brand new. I've been using it heavily for a few weeks now, and it still blazes like new on the (thought dead) original batteries. So if your dies quickly wiggle that button LOL. Man for $10 this is an impressive laser.
