yeah the crystals arent very efficient. there will always be extra ir coming out unless its a really low powered laser maybe. ir isnt any worse than any other color expect that the beam doesnt collimate quite as good as most others and you cant see it so you can never be sure its going where its supposed to unless you look at it through a camera that can see ir or with an ir pass filter.

i would not recommend using heat to try and release the cap. the heat that would be required would probably ruin something. the best way, which is still risky, is the use an adjustable locking wrench or vise to hold the cap and then twist the body by hand, perhaps with one of those wrenches with a rubber strap for grip, like the ones used on oil filters. there is a good chance the cap will be ruined in this process. just be careful when you tighten things so you dont crush anything.

I wouldn't take it apart as long as it functions correctly.

Sometimes heat works to weaken the glue, and with a vice and some force its possible to open these lasers - but all that could easily damage something. I dont think there is a removable IR filter in there, and if there is, it's probably behind the focussing lens, which means you have to take the optical assembly apart to some degree.

IR doesnt come out collimated in any case, so it's no use to make a burning laser or something like that (just get a red..).
