Yea, I had to solder directly too!!!!! I tried focus adjustment and discovered something interesting. Th diode and pump crystal are on the far end of the housing and the lens is about 1.5 to 2 inches away from the actual laser output. I'm going to adjust current up too. I will get pics and post this afternoon.

Well I had a little more time with it. I soldered the power leads form the diode after adjusting current. Here is the strange part. I could not get above about 380 ma. The pot increases current when rotated counterclockwise which is backwards from what I would expect. My power supply will supply about 2 amps and it wasn't hitting any limits. I am guessing I can run this off of a current regulator LM317 direct into the diode. I will have to bread board something up and see. I really don't want to fry this though! Here are some pics and the current I set it too. I am going to try and focus the beam next.

Yeah I got the same results, mines is doing 422mA at 6.1VDC, but the pot only changes the current by ± 4mA, my PSU can supply 2.19A. I have mines inside an old PC PSU now sitting quite happily, I need to find a 6V 450mA DC adapter for it though, and a fan and DC adapter for that too.

Remember if you using an LM317 to drive the module the voltage for IR diodes is lower than red diodes.

I would go a little higher in current rating. If you can find a 6-volt 1 amp supply that would be better.

plus I would go for a regulated supply, linear power supplies can output strange voltages

I HATE intermittent alligators, I just said screw it and made my own with 18 gauge wire, works great and everything is copper so it conducts heat and electricity very well.
