I ordered the 200mw model of the Gatlin style focusable green from O-like.
First off, let me just say that this is my first DPSS to own... ever.
The laser (without the tailcap) came packaged in a small foam lined tin. The metal is thin, and easily dents. So it's not great protection, but it makes for a clean look.
Susie emailed me saying that my unit was measured for ">180mw output". Fair enough.
The unit is WAY larger than I had pictured it to be.
The build is VERY solid, and kind of heavy. It seems a bit large for something to hold in your hand as a torch of any kind, but that's no problem. For all of you "laser holder" owners out there, your holder has met it's favorite laser. This host WANTS to be held in these microphone clips. It stays steady, and gripped tight in my LEC laser holder.
I have not yet tested it's water seals, and I don't really plan to, since there's only one way to do that. But looking at the rubber seal, I'd say that the battery tube will stay dry just fine. The tightly threaded focus ring up front makes focusing a joy to do, knowing that the setting won't easily get bumped or knocked out of place.
My Protected secondary RCR123s fit very tight into this laser. I recommend wiggling the battery around the top in a circle to get a more comfortable fit. This is what Jayrob also recommends to those that use his pocket mini kits. Its works here too.
The beam qualities are hard to measure since the laser's focus is adjustable, but the least divergence that I could adjust to, came to about 1.9mRad. Not great, but workable for me. This keeps that beam visible over distances. The smallest aperture diameter I was able to achieve was at about 1.4-1.5mm. I also caught the laser mode hopping a couple times so far. For about 2 mins from start up time, I noticed that the beam was a clean TEM10. After then, it seemed to clear up a bit. I haven't have any other modes than TEM00 since.
Overall, for my first DPSS laser, I have to say I'm impressed with the new kinds of beam qualities I get to work with, and the brightness of the beam in a nicely lit room. This one is going to get lots of use, I can tell already. For you beam quality junkies out there, I would worry about getting this laser, thinking it's going to be a nice pointer. As for burning, it does just fine. I love having unique hosts, and this one is definitely the most unique of them all!
I have to say, 7.5/10. Good laser. Not great, but worth the money for sure.
I hope someone can find this review useful.
