Thanks Seoul!! Yes I am using a 405G lens, this little purple gem was intended to be a burning laser & it's a massive little beast!! :eg: I agree with you that a 1W party is definitely in order, count me in

Yes I and I see you running it 650mA? I don't know how long the LD will last at that current.

I have a 500mA set 12x from Dave Guin, and with a 3 element Aixiz lens does just around 690-703mW. Now, going 405 G1 at 30% on top. That's about ~910mW Pk...
You look like you're peaking around ~nearly 1.1W. Still WOW!

Now, I must caution you, you should get your laser PM'd on a calibrated Ophir laser sensor. Just for the record!!

Well thank you for the advice, and while I appreciate your concern I'm curious why you're cautioning me on this...

As you can see in the video I use a laserbee II for metering & I've found it to be quite accurate when it comes to metering. For example, my 5mW lasers meter at 4.8-5mW depending on the battery I use & what the output voltage is. Other lasers in the 500mw - 800mw range that I've built with certain driver settings that yield an expected output have also metered right around where I'd thought them to be. Overall I've found my laserbee to be extremely accurate, so that's why I ask.

I looks like I may need to post another video of this little monster taking a few plastic lives, then take a meter reading to check it afterward & prove its strength :eg::thinking::beer:

Absolutely amazing! I can only imagine how it feels to hold that beast in your hand.

Actually that isn't why I am cautioning you. I wonder what the initial startup of the laser for the first few seconds might be. Since the Laserbee sensor is essentially blind for ~3seconds, until it "warms up", I suggest an Ophir sensor because you're able to get results instantly.
You can see how the laser behaves in your sinking material with a little more precision.
None the less I don't doubt your output nor the accuracy of the laserbee, abiet the measurement is a little delayed.

I hear you Seoul, I apologize for misunderstanding

As for the delay, you can see in the link the laser does jump up to 400mW+ within the first ~2 seconds of the measuring before it continues climbing up to 1 watt - so I'm curious how much the delay you mention on the laserbee makes a difference or not (?)

I'll have to shoot & post another video soon to show some more results, I'm wrapping up a 3 day project from this weekend so hopefully I can find the time to do this soon :D

Well, that's what I am sort of inferring about the delay.
You can't see peak power using a laserbee due to the lag effect created by the sensor.
I'm willing to bet that your peak energy is much higher than reported! Well over 1.1W???... What you are seeing on the laserbee is a stability at ~1W, which is a feat in itself. What I am very curious about is the first 0-4 seconds of on time, how high does the peak go? and How much drop from the initial peak is there?

Interesting Seoul, I would not have thought the peak was hitting until after the laser was warmed up & running. Thank you for making that clear, I never thought of how it would measure that way. In this case I think you are correct that there's no way I could accurately measure its instant peak on my LPM.

You wouldn't happen to have an Ophir sensor lying around I could borrow, would you? :D

405 diodes are very stable so I doubt you would get a higher reading even if you used a Ophir or some other instant reading LPM. In fact they do seem to go up a few mW right after about a 10-15 second warm-up. This is not the case with most of the multi-mode diodes like the 445's and Mitsu 635's we have been playing with lately that are extremely temperature sensitive and drop like a rock from the moment you fire them up.

I somehow missed this thread until now...

Great job with that build! Very clean, nice pictures too!

1 Watt!

Phew...

P.S. I missed the information on the driver. Is it an X-Drive buck driver from Lazeerer? Linear driver? 680mA's I saw that... :thanks:
Edit: Oh Pipsqueak... Is that a Jib style linear?

Thank you too Jayrob! Yes it's an old jib drive I've had from last year when he did the wide range of drivers. It's a 501mA driver but oddly it's always registered differently that the other drivers in the batch..... It shows ~150mA higher than the other .5A drivers, no idea why

Keep us updated on the life of the unit. I had a 1W unit that I built but it only lasted a few weeks with minimal use.:cryyy:

Indeed! Here's an update on how this hot little 12X scorcher has been doing. I ran 2 tests.....

EDIT: damn the quality went to hell in that 1st video, didn't notice the LPM was unviewable until after it uploaded. 2nd test should look better...
