the module and lens are included with the host and I was going to buy the battery separately. I just thought it looked like a good cheap kit to start out with.

Oh did not see that. Then you are set other than the battery. Which diode were you going to get?

It is a PHR-803T which I believe comes from the 360 HD DVD drive

Good deal. Make sure you check the blu ray section for the proper current to set it to for long life. The driver that you linked to says it will go above 400mA which will definitely kill that diode. Which reminds me you will need to build or buy a test load for setting the current.:D

Got any suggestions on how to do this? I searched and found a few different templates.

I believe that Stonetek sells an assembled test load. That would be your easy way out since you are already ordering from them. Flaminpryo sell a couple of nice ones as well. Or you could look around and build one of the ones that there are guides for here.;)

Sorry to bump this back up but are the 22600s that kaidomain sells individual or a two pack? It doesn't say on their website. I assume it's just a single from the pic they show. I was going to order them alomg with 2 18650s and a charger for the 22600s from that ebay seller but it appears he doesn't combine shipping since each item requires immediate payment and I'm not going to pay $30 in shipping for 4 batteries and a charger.

They are single cells. It appears they get them in the two packs and sell them as single units. They still have half the two pack wrapper around them.

Thanks for the quick response. Figured so. Guess I have two (point five) options.

1a. Contact the ebay seller and see if they can combine shipping so it doesn't cost more than the 3 items I'm interested in.

1b. Buy the 22600s from that ebay seller and get the WF-188 and 18650s from lighthund.

2. Forget the 22600s and the WF-188 (do I really need a 4th charger?!) and order the 18650s I need from battery junction since they're on sale along with some 18500s and do the mod you showed since I'm only going to be powering a PHR in this thing. (hmm. I could even go 2x 3.7v CR2 rechargeable and build a DDL driver for it and save the cost of a microboost. tempting...)

Hmm I think I like option 2 because then I can put the money saved towards ordering one of your 445 diodes. :p

Great build and review as usual DTR! You've got me thinking about trying another build...

Also, excellent build quality. If you don't mind me asking here, what iron/solder do you use? My dad's 20 year old gun just isn't cutting it for me.

I use a Weller P2K adjustable butane iron and Rosin Core solder.

Well he asked about the iron and solder. I do use flux. The stuff I like the best is from flaminpryo. The needle makes it easy to dispense and works with just the smallest amount.;)

Oh hah, I've never even used flux... Maybe that's part of the problem.

Thanks for the information!

Where can I get the solder flux and that needle thing from?
