10mW decorated pens from Kaidomain ($13.03)

Hey!

While back I pointed out a few new decorated shafted greenies at Kaidomain.com. I placed an order and wanted to do a recap of the experience of kaidomain & the delivered laser pointers.

The company

This is my first experience with Kaidomain. A regular HK supplier of non-garunteed-speced pointers. :-)

Order was placed on August 27th making it a 14 day delivery round trip to Sweden :-). Then the package arrived:

All in all a fair delivery. Not too fast. But not too slow either.

The delivery of the laser pointers inside were in standard black boxes with a small packaging note:

All in all the process of dealing with kaidomain went smooth. Delivery-wise. They were helpful and replied within 24 hours to inquiries about status of my delivery.

General properties

  • 10mW
  • 532nm +-10nm
  • Tight beam on all except for one. Excellent! DISSECTION! :-)
  • Runs on 2x AAA-batteries
  • Shaft consists of thin aluminum with engravings & design!
  • Priced at $13.03 / ea for 10mW at kaidomain.com or $11.68 for 5mW models at focalprice.com.

Pointer design & build quality

These pointers are very designed! They are *VERY* light weight. The casing most likely consists of fairly thin aluminum.

These pointers do design-wise look like the standard china pointer encasings, which most likely all of you know how they feel. But a quick weight comparacy shows 76g vs 36g! That's almost half the weight!

The markings you see on the shell are actual engravings in the all-aluminum casing which embodies these laser pointers making them very stylish.

The push button actually feels firm! It aligns good and does it's job well.

Unscrewing this pointer feels very unstable and fragile. Which is a bad point for the build impression of course.

Beam quality

1 / 4 pointers had a terrible divergence. I would guess that the lens was badly aligned.

1 / 3 remaining pointers had an obvious weaker output power than the rest.

2 / 4 in total had good power output and great divergence! The dot size at ~50m distance compared to FP's 50mW AA-pointers was about 2/3. And I still recon these pointers to be quite fair divergence-wise. They were in the same class as the buyincoins 5mW'ers I've got :-)

As you can see in the picture below the output beam had some round artifacts around the impact dot. But it's in my opinion fairly focused.

Disection

I mentioned earlier that one of the pointers had terrible divergence. This was luckily the silver one. Which makes it a target for a brutal dissection! :-)

Something made of apparent plastic sticks up. Very cheap build. I have never seen the focus lens mounted on a plastic holder before! This obviously contributes to the total weight.

After a lot of struggle I managed to peel this off aswell. Later on I realised that I just screwed it out of it socket ;)

Anyhow. I was able to push the diode out from behind. NOT A CHANCE that I can reassemble this one btw!

I really like what they have done to the battery connector solderwise. It actually goes through the board at two places and added soldering. This makes for a stable build.

Yes. It's a bit bashed up ;)

Just for fun I decided to hook it back up to a cell to see if it was still alive:

Without the focus lense I aimed it at a black electrical tape roll at about 3-4mm distance. It burnt a tiny hole in it! :D I don't have three hands (battery mount glitched), so didn't take a picture of it.

Power output

It looks and feels like it would be a 10mW. It's a fair buy for the money. I doubt that the FP 5mW and the KD 10mW differ in diode and/or build in *any* way! :-)

Edit: I uploaded a video staring this diode lighting a match. It has been picked down to it's very base! Sorry for bad light conditions to see the smoke. You barely see the fire from the match. :D If the download of attachment doesn't work it's hosted here.

I see that the LaserBees are back in stock. And I'm *gonna* get one.

Conclusion

These pointers are light, fair built & usually quite on expectation. They are certainly good looking and perfect gifts.

They work as intended!

I am a bit curious about the accompanying batteries:

The only thing that makes me curious is that they re-assemble a lot of the properties I had with Lithium batteries. The weight is very low (As are the lithiums). And the +-connector is very.. unusual. Like a knob that isn't supposed to be there. It's quite hard to describe.

Measuring the weight I can say that these batteries weight 12g in a pair. The lightest alkalines I have at home are 22g a pair. The heaviest is up to 29g a pair. This may just say that the accompanying batteries are really crappy ;) I don't know. And I don't know Chinese. So I cannot look them up. Which is annoying :p

If you have any feedback on this it'd be appreciated!

I must say I love the review. Excellent wording, organized and fun to read. The links were cool as well. They look kinda sweet, maybe ill pick up a couple of the 5mW's to play around with.

That's the same kind of module that is in my 50mW ledshoppe laser.

But still a bit cool for a 10mW speced diode. Note the red colored tip of the match aswell. It has some good output.

This is course green + IR. But then again there is no IR filter in this device.
