Got this unit on EBay for $20 (seller has 3 more but has raised the price to $80 + $20sh). The title read '652nm-658nm system' and the description simply read

'i don't know what it is. just show what aboved.

\ -------- 20 usd for it. no return back warranty.AS-IS condition'

Anybody know what this is, used for, value, etc? And the cable running to it, is that a fiber optic line? What would its function be and how is one used?
:wtf::thinking:

Im guessing its a barcode scanner.

At a guess, this. If so, it might be the type that creates a squirly, spirally 3D pattern, like a spirograph. You should have some fun with that if you get it lit. If it is this type, replace the laser in there with a 200mW red, fill a room with smoke, power up the motors, and watch the beams!

Interferometer for very precise distance measurement...

Add 2 photodiodes or a CCD , a precision single frequency hene, some signal processing, and a external retroreflector on whatever you want to track, and probably measure at 1 nanometer or less steps...

Something like this:

Agilent | Overview: Laser Interferometer Position Measurement Systems

Wickedly expensive thing you have, when new. May not be a agilent, but its a similar interferometer...

If you launch a normal hene up the fiber and hold a corner cube in front of the windows, you'll see massive amounts of fringes where the missing detector goes.

Now you know, the rest of the story..... A rep point please :)

I have a couple hene's, how would I link it to the cable? I tried putting the cable in front of a diode but nothing came out.

That looks like a 62/125 polarization preserving fiber, so you have to focus the spot to less then 62 microns. Then you need to hit the center of the fiber. Usually things like that are also polarized, and have polarization based isolators to prevent back reflection, so you may have to rotate the fiber around its axis..

Its not hard to focus a hene to 62 u, a 30 mm focal length lens or a 4 power microscope objective will do that just fine... With a good collimated diode, you'll get about 20% of the coupled power you'd get with a hene... This leads to a temptation to use a brighter diode, ...

with steady hands, you'll get flashes up the fiber just holding the lens and the fiber..

Google "fiber launch" and you'll get plenty of hits and a lot of BS....

If you have a bright diode, watch your eyes for back reflections...
