Writing speed?

My parents have had this cd-burner for a while, and are going to get a new one. My question is, what is the writing speed? I do not have the packaging, and there are no labels that directly say what the writing speed is. The brand is "iomega", and is translucant blue in color. Is says CD-RW on the thing that comes out to put the disk in, and has these numbers, which I think one of is the writing speed: 16x10x40x
I've never heard of a speed of 10x or 40x, but I want to know what you think. Also to note: It does not say anything like "CLASS I LASER PRODUCT" on the bottom, so I don't know if it even uses a laser.

16x write, 10x re-write, 40x read

It definitely has a laser (all optical storage media do).  However, its only going to be an IR laser diode; not really worth your time.
