Quick question, are CR123's good to use? I read online that the lithium ion are 3.7v, and the non rechargeable ones I think Lithium standard, something like that are 3v. You think using 2 or three cr123's are good?

I would use li-ions so you can recharge them. The number of batteries depends on the voltage required by the driver. Remember that fully charged they can be 4.2V so 2 stacked can be up to 8.4V.

well, I do plan on shoving a simple LM317 driver in there, so a 9v batt works, but short lived.

Does the LM317 have a max amp input? because I read that those CR123's have a lot of mA's... Correct me if I'm wrong.

That's not an issue at all, the more mah the batteries have, the longer they last.
The LM317 DOES have a maximum input voltage, I don't quite remember,
but you can always look here.

I know that they take up to 30V. I was talking about maximum amp input.
