With some MAJOR modifications, yes it could work. But you'd be doing more work than to just build your own.

The Mods have really been 'on it' in keeping the forum neat and tidy lately. And as we all know there has been a LOT of work to do so.

I want to publicly express my appreciation for all the time the Mods put in just so that I can have all this info at my disposal. Thanks Guys! (And girl! ;) )

cool thanks,

So, where's the best place to buy the components for the homemade driver. Specifically the lm317, I checked at my local radio shack and they didn't have one :-?

If you want an LM317, ask the shirts at RS which stores are 'parts' stores. They're usually the ones not in malls. RS has them at high prices, but if you're buying a lot more, check out Digikey (digikey.com). Great prices, but minimum $25.00 order.

not minimum, but under $25 you pay $5 extra handling. Buy a driver from me and save the hassle :p
