Hi, im planning on building a red laser but i want to know which is better.
A high power dvd burner diode, or a Open can red diode?
And whats the differnce, can anybody help?

Where can i get a good diode for a Red laser build thats a good price?

What power diode would you be able to see the beam on a read diode. Cause i know its not as bright as a green laser.
Thanks in advance :)

I've bought 4 of these. they are also pretty easy to harvest (not quite as easy as the br's, but still a weak challenge).

OK, thanks guys for the info. Wasnt sure if it was just that you have 2 options in choosing a red diode.

And at what power output will you be able to clearly see the red line?

Give it 420mA for nice output, long life.
Some type of heat sink & reasonable run times help it last @ 430mA

This is about the 20x/22x diodes, as opposed to a 16x. The 22x diodes are much more powerful than the 16x. You can also PM TheMonk if you would like them pre-mounted in an Aixiz module.

One of these threads has the power grap for the various red laser diodes available. Maybe consult that and see what you need. I know Senkat's 16x diodes have pretty good curves, and they're windowless too, so it's almost like an open can.

Only Senkat's IR diodes are windowless, the 16x reds have windows..

For a visible beam, the long die open-can diode is the best. You'll only be able to see the beam in very dark conditions though. This also depends on the humidity and cleanliness of the air.

When choosing a burner, make sure to ask in the forum to make sure it does not contain a useless flat-type diode. Your best bet is to buy from Themonk:)

Although I do NOT suggest this, my open can red has been running at 484mA for about three months now with no problems. I even screwed up once and left it on for 10 minutes with no damage. The host/heatsink were very hot to the touch. Again, I am not promoting driving these diodes that high, but it just goes to show how durable they are. ;D

Glaserfan, yes, i'm been getting alot of recom about TheMonk, and i was looking into it too.
But thats the most likely way i will go, with BulletProofMonk. I mean TheMonk.... ;D

I looked at his picture and his Diodes does look nice, but i like to harvest the diode myself. i wonder if he has any driver still unharvest? takes all the fun out of building a laser if you already have a diode harvested and a driver built :) That would be called putting together a laser, where as i want to build a laser ;D

But i have taken all the info that this thread has given me and put it to good use. ;) Thanks
