What is wrong with this laser?

Bought Gozert's Dorcy Jr 405nm. He rated it at >700mW, probably at like 2-6mW

Am I missing something here? Did he do something to lower the output for customs? Is something wrong?
Received it today and:

1. The focus is trash; focuses to a rectangle

2. power output is like 2-6mW

Here are pictures of everything

Re: Did I get scammed/hosed?

Here are the two pictures comparing the focused Dorcy Jr

The second picture is a 405nm 473mW unfocused (confirmed) From theJoker @Sci-Fi

Have you contacted Gozert or PMed Gozert?
What did Gozert say?
I am sure that he will take care of this for you right away.

Re: Did I get scammed/hosed?

I've sent him a PM and I know he is in the Netherlands.

I'll take out the question of did I get scammed as I'm not accusing him, I just really wanted to know if there was something wrong/some thing I needed to do for output power and focusing

Do you see anything wrong with the guts of the laser?

Obviously you can see the output difference. I was really excited, rushed home from work and everything

Re: Is something wrong with this laser?

I am not familiar with that laser but be sure that all connections are good and you are using the correct battery. Is there a safety pin/key on that laser? if so, make sure it is seated good to obtain 100% power. On some lasers I have, if it is loose the output is very dim until I correct the connection.
Not to argue with you and I know that you are upset with how the laser is performing but if you have not contacted Gozert or have not had a reply yet. It is very unfair to come blasting on here without giving him a chance to resolve this with you directly first.

No no no! That's why I removed all the negative stuff on the post. Looking for posts such as the first part of yours to give me an idea of what I can do to fix it.

What did you mean by safety pin/key

A safety pin/key is built into many laser host designs to stop unauthorized usage. You pull the key or pin and it disables the laser.

It is on the outside of the host, usually the end/tail cap.
About 3/8 of an inch in diameter or a little key like a luggage lock key.

Re: Is something wrong with this laser?

First off, Gozert is as stand up and honest as they come. So before you get all worked up take a deep breath and relax. Glad you edited your post but it really never should have come to that in the first place.

The lens may be backwards. They will only focus to a large rectangle this way. Did you try turning the lens around?

What battery type are you using? Because for example, if it takes 2 x 16340's or 2 x 18350's but you are mistakenly using an single 18650 you will have a very large decrease in power. Looks like that host is too small for an 18650 but make sure your using the correct battery. What type does it take? Did you put the battery in the wrong direction at any point? This will damage the driver, diode, or both.

Do you own a multi-meter? If so you can put the probe in place of the cap and see what its reading. This can help you rule out driver/battery being the problem.

Re: Is something wrong with this laser?

Just replied your PM with some tips. Like I said in the PM, I always test my lasers right before they go into the box to prevent issues with them as they arrive. The dot does indeed look dim compared to your other 405nm, so something is wrong. What exact battery are you using, and is it fully charged? Also, how did you place the battery? I know from past experiences that the laser does indeed lower it's output significantly when there isn't enough battery life left.

I said it may look dim compared to your other lasers in my PM, but seeing how you compared it to another 405nm that's irrelevant.

One more thing. Try tightening the tailcap as good as you can. I've had a few anodized maglites that would only make contact if the tailcap was screwed on tight because just at the far edge there wasn't anodization. I'm not sure if this was the case with this laser too, but give it a try.

Edit: The lens is perfectly fine. I've used it on many builds including this. It focuses to infinity when it's screwed almost all the way in. The beam shape is due to the nature of these lenses. You will often find it on high powered direct diode lasers to increase their output.

Re: Is something wrong with this laser?

Hope this works out. Following because I've had 2 405's LED on me this year after just a few seconds. No more 405's for me.

Re: Is something wrong with this laser?

Another thing. Try replacing the tailcap with the spare I sent with it. I'll wait for your reply to my PM and we're going to work this out, don't worry.

I've done pretty much everything I could do without messing with the actual components themselves :(

I have tried high discharge batteries, 100% charged
I have tried regular discharge batteries, 100% charged
The tailcap in the picture is the replacement you sent me, thanks for that by the way
The picture where it looks focused, isn't really focused, I just took the picture with it close to the shirt so you could see it. The 437mW that is in the second picture, if I were to focus it, would set that shirt on fire nearly instantly. The DorcyJr just isn't putting out any power at all. I love this laser too, it just doesn't work lol

*Edit* After looking at my pictures I see that the rectangular focus is because the hole is shaped like a rectangle. meh

*Edit2* Yeah, it doesn't even turn on sometimes. It isn't focused to infinity at all either. The beam, if you can even call it that at 3mW, spreads to about 3 inches wide at 5 feet away
