Default What Kind of Diode is this?

My friend had a LG Super Multi DVD Rewriter Model GSA - H55L . He didn't need it any more so I thought I would take it apart and see what I could find. I found this weird looking diode. Thought someone would be able to tell me what it is. It doesn't have the normal Pin structure on the back. Well I'm new to this so I really don't know normal from weird.
It is a light Scribe also. I typed in the model number and found a little info. I think it might be an IR diode but i am unsure.

Thanks !!

These are not diodes. They are sleds. The diodes will be in the sleds

Peace,

Ok so i figured out i was looking at the wrong part. I Pulled out two heat sinks and i am not sure what they are. One has blue purple sheen on the glass on the top. The other is like an open diode. anyone know what these are??

Larger pictures would help, but it looks like the "open" looking one is indeed an open can red laser diode. It is still in its heat sink (the gray metal)

The other one would be your IR diode

Peace,
dave

Thanks for your Help Daguin. I really appreciate it.

Here is a larger pic. So the left diode would be the IR and the Right one would be the Open can Red Diode ?

How do you tell what type of current to put through? Or around what MW it would be ??

Thanks again.

I went to your photobucket account to see the picture. *The open looking one is an open can red diode. *I cannot tell from the angle (and with it still in its heat sink) if it is a long open can or a short open can. *Can you tell me what the "burn" speed was for the unit it came from 10X, 16X, 18X, 20X, 22X?

Peace,
dave

**EDIT**
Never mind. *I looked it up. *It is a 20X. *That means that the diode is a long open can. *You can run that one very safely (in a heat sink) at 420mA. *It should give you about 260mW at that current.

Looked it up and this is what it said as it doesn't say on the unit itself.

Hitachi LG Data Storage (HLDS) recently released a new Super Multi DVD Rewriter, capable of writing DVD recordables at 20x and supporting the RAM 2 specifications (Ver 2.1) for 12x writing on DVD-RAM media.

I will have to read a tutorial on how to take the diode out of the heat sink and ill post some more pics.

Thanks again for all your help.

I LOVE THIS PLACE !!

You need the module otherwise you won't be able to use a proper lens to give you the nice beam.

Practise getting it out of the heatsink with the IR one first. Don't get the red out until you have a module to put it straight into.

Got my sure module here. http://www.hightechdealz.com/
I don't know if the Aixiz is considered to be better or not but the
Sure module is working great for me and it was cheaper than the
Aixiz. Stonetek is another good source. There is a link for them at
the top of this page.

i saw a video on Metacafe about this diode, I dont know of this is true. Shows it can go up to 500mW and seems with a safe current of 600mA. I looked on ebay that they sell these dvd burners for just 20 dollars.
I believe these diodes can be used with rkcstr and flex drivers.
