Hey guys, how would i tell what lead is the vout and what lead is the Vin on a potentiometer? Also, what would be a good battery to test my diode with?

A pot don't have any polarity. Take the center lead and then connect it to one of the other two. The third one is the "out" and the center one is the "in" or vise versa. I dont know if there is any good battey for testing laser diodes though.

Thank you very much. Also, is there anyway to test if a diode is still good without a driver or AixiZ housing?

Don't use a battery. YOu can safely use a multimeter that has Diode check functionality. You should see it light up fairly dim.

To late, i have just the diode, no housing and hooked it up to my " Electronics Learning Lab"! all i got at 3 volts was diffused but blinding red light. I think i killed the diode. Then i decided to put it up to 9 volts, 6 AA batteries. And it shined for like 50 seconds were i couldn't look without blinking super fast then one of the legs melted. :-/

The diode is gone for sure, but NEVER look in the diode! Your eyes, that's what matters.

The diode is rated for 3v and you put 9v to it, and then looked into it? You have to be kidding, no one is that dumb. You also have an "Electronics Learning Lab" but did you read or learn anything? You have no patience and couldn't wait for a response before hooking it up either? I think this might be the wrong hubby for you and you should stick to something else, this requires patience and intelligence/common sense. I don't mean to sound like a jerk but it is like sitting in a car then pushing the gas pedal to the floor while in neutral and then being like I think I killed the motor.

No, i didn't look into it. Why would i do that. Blinding light was an exaggeration. The reason i hooked it up to the 3 volts was because it was my first harvest and wanted to make sure i had the right diode because i couldn't find any info on the web on how to do it or by asking you guys. And the last part was kind of an exaggeration but the leg did fall off, not so much melted. The diode was burnt out so i thought i would play around with it. I had it shining at a wall 15 feet away. I am sorry for exaggerating but i was exited when i wrote it. Also, are purchasing the SenKat diodes even worth it? because i have my driver board and all i need is the diode. I have 2 cases, 1 with fans and i dont know if i should buy the phasor diode even though it is much more expensive. Thanks guys and sorry.

Buy the phazor if you aren't going to "experiment" with it by giving it 3x it's max voltage. If you want to play and test limits and circuits go for the senkat and buy like 3

I took your advice, thank you. I bought 2 Senkat diodes pre-mounted in the housing, 3 sets of components for driver boards, and a third AixiZ module for the phasor diode i am going to buy. Thanks for your help.

You shouldn't have bought the SenKat diodes, well at least not yet. Recently he got a bad batch of diodes which aren't 16x diodes, but 12x diodes. So you won't be able to drive them with the usual current people used to drive them at or they'll die. It looks like he has fixed the problem and he'll be getting another shippment of the good diodes.
Although if you just want to exeperiment with them, then I guess this shouldn't be a problem.

Actually, it doesn't matter that he put 9 volts to it. He killed it because of too much current. You can run a laser diode on basically any voltage over 3 volts as long as you keep the current right.

You can't increase one without increasing the other. Run 9 volts into a diode from a standard battery and we are talking amps...lol. By limiting current like we do with the 317 we are also limiting voltage.
