Default Strange Laser Diode?!

I went to my local Best Buy and bought a 20x Sony DVD burning drive for 59.99...
I began to take it apart and i didn't see anything that resembled a typical laser diode. I began messing around and i finally found what i was looking for...sort of.

Just add h t t p : / / in front of the links below.

This is the Diode from the Sony:

This is the same Diode being powered:

Is this type of laser diode able to be used in any laser housing or is it just 60 bucks down the drain? :-/

Why would you spend $60.00 for a weird Red LD....
when you can get a 16X DVD Burner LD here on the
forum for around $20.00...
http://stonetek.org/shop/index.php?m...26c07227a5120f

You could use that diode but it will be more difficult to mount
in any kind of host...

That's why we tell all the new members to read... read... and
read some more...

There is a lot of Laser information here that will save you a lot
of money in the long run...

BTW... welcome to the forum...

Jerry

Thank you for the info! *

Just wondering about the heat it will produce... It's surrounded by thin plastic. *do these type of diodes produce lees heat or stay cooler than a closed can?

i tried to look up more info on this type of diode but with no success.

Why even bother with Stonetek's overpriced stuff? Just get one of the open-can sleds from the BST or group buy sections. For less than the price of the 16x diode on Stonetek you can get a 20x open-can diode pressed into a module.
