Hehe, i actually didn't kill the diode and the laser works perfect!

Try silver solder, flows much better.

Also if you want a really easy life, don't bother with the lead-free-solder crap.

True ! Also - just as a Safety Sam tip : Wash your hands thoroughly after handling solder, and electronics - lotsa lead in them, and it washes off fairly easily
